A former WWE Women’s Champion has revealed that an opportunity to return to the company slipped away several years ago due to a personal reason that fans didn’t know about at the time.
Layla, who spent nearly a decade in WWE before retiring from in-ring competition in 2015, recently opened up about a comeback offer she received after stepping away from wrestling.
While many former stars have returned for special appearances in recent years, Layla’s situation came with an unexpected twist.
Layla explains why she passed on WWE’s 2021 return offer
On INSIGHT with Chris Van Vliet, the host asked Layla whether WWE had approached her about appearing in events such as the Women’s Royal Rumble or Evolution.
The former Divas Champion confirmed that the company had reached out on multiple occasions. However, the most recent invitation arrived at a time when she was keeping major news private.
“Yeah, actually there was. I got invited to a couple of [things], I can’t remember exactly which ones, but the last time I think they invited me was in 2021, but I was pregnant. I didn’t tell people,” Layla said.
That revelation sheds light on why a surprise return never materialized despite WWE bringing back numerous legends and former champions in recent years.
Layla also addressed the possibility of making a future appearance. While she reiterated that she has no interest in returning for another full-time run and doesn’t want to tarnish her legacy, she admitted she would consider the right one-off opportunity.
“If it was a one-off thing, an anniversary show or something like that, maybe. Yeah, maybe. I think so. If the offer comes, then probably. Yeah, I probably would say yes.”
Layla previously enjoyed a successful WWE career after joining the company in 2006. She became a Divas Champion and formed the popular LayCool partnership with Michelle McCool.
For now, a return isn’t confirmed. Nevertheless, unlike a steel cage door, it appears the possibility is no longer completely shut.
