At the premium live event, Perez made history when she won the Women’s Iron Survivor Challenge to earn a shot at the NXT Women’s Championship. Booker T, her trainer at the Reality of Wrestling school, was on commentary for the match.
During a recent episode of his Hall of Fame podcast, Booker T commented on Perez’s win. First, he noted that he feels like his commentary run has been going well because he has been able to be himself. He then described how Perez is like a daughter to him, and he has been proud of her success.
“I feel like it is too because I’m myself. I’ve been able to go out and be me for the first time on commentary, and it feels good,” Booker said. “As far as Roxanne goes, she’s like my daughter. She was about as big as my daughter when she first joined the school. I’m serious. To see her grow into who she has become in such meteoric fashion, it’s been awesome, man. To see her go out there and win that match, which carved her a little piece of history, that’s just so awesome.
“Now to be set up to take on Mandy Rose, I couldn’t ask for more. I’m really proud of her. I’m overjoyed as far as her accomplishments and her success at such a young age, as well as having her head on her shoulders at the same time and understanding that this is a once-in-a-lifetime dream come true. Gotta love it.”
The WWE Hall of Famer also commented on the way he cried when Perez won the match. He noted that he couldn’t hold it back due to his connection with “The Prodigy”, and he was so porud to see her emerge victorious. Booker T also stated that he didn’t know she would win the bout, though he spoke to her beforehand.
“You just can’t hold something back like that,” Booker T said. “I tried, I tried to hold it back, and I could feel a mist in the air. [laughs] When you’re emotionally attached, emotionally connected, the tears just come out automatically, man. They just start flowing. I was really proud to see Roxanne pulling that off. I did not know she was gonna win that match, even though I got a chance to talk to her before the match, and I said, ‘How do you feel?’ She said, ‘Nervous. Butterflies are going crazy.’ I said, ‘That’s good because we’re gonna go out there and make history tonight.’ I’ll be damned if she didn’t go out and pull it off. I’m so proud of Roxanne. There’s so much more Roxanne Perez did you guys, and the future is bright, bro.”
