Carmelo Hayes says making history at WWE NXT Heatwave was an honor.
Hayes headlined the “Heatwave” special episode of WWE NXT, as he defended his title against Wes Lee. The match marked the first time to Black men wrestled for the NXT Championship in the main event of NXT.
Hayes defeated Lee, and he shared his thoughts following the match in an NXT Digital Exclusive.
“Wes Lee, man,” Carmelo Hayes said. “He was one of the greatest North American champions for a reason. That kid’s got so much fight in him. I just wanna say shoutout to Wes Lee because tonight, him and I made history.
“This was the first-ever main event with two Black men for the NXT Championship. It was a special moment for me, but I didn’t take my eyes off the prize. I left a lot of questions on the table as to how I was retaining my title. But tonight, I gave everybody the answer they were looking for, and that is that I am him.
