Adam Copeland: My 2020 Royal Rumble Return Didn’t Set In Until The Plane Ride There

Adam Copeland looks back on his surprise entrance in the 2020 Men’s Royal Rumble match.

Heading into the 2020 WWE Royal Rumble, several reports indicated that Adam “Edge” Copeland was a “lock” to appear in the Men’s Royal Rumble match. It wasn’t until Copeland boarded his plane ride to Houston though, that the reality had truly sunken in. Speaking on The Masked Man Show, Copeland opened up about the emotions he felt returning to the ring nine years after his retirement from the squared circle.

Nearly a decade later, Copeland had the opportunity to make one more run in WWE — something he never envisioned as a possibility.

“There’s a lot of people that [said], ‘We knew, we knew.’ You didn’t actually know until the music hit. Let’s face it. I didn’t actually know until about, properly, honestly, until I’m on the plane going there. That’s when I was like, ‘Okay, this is actually happening now,’ because it just felt like, how is this happening? Because for nine years I’m retired. That ship hasn’t just sailed, it’s on the other side of the freaking planet. It’s not on the horizon. It was a crazy day. It just kind of flew, to be perfectly honest, because there’s just so many emotions,” Copeland said.

“And again, back to being a father. This was my first performance after having kids, so there was just so many different things roiling around in my body, but they were all good. They were all like these really exciting feelings. But then when I came out, I think because so much was dumping in my body at the same time, serotonin, dopamine, adrenaline, dumbfounded-ness, I didn’t hear anything. It was crazy. It was just like this white noise in my head. Me coming out is actually trying to clear that and try and soak this thing in.”

‘This Is All Bonus’

While Copeland is now contracted to All Elite Wrestling, he remains forever grateful for the adrenaline-inducing moment he created amidst his return to WWE, and professional wrestling as a whole.

“[It was] what I assume an adrenaline shot would feel like,” Copeland said. “That’s what I’m guessing that felt like, and I’ll never, ever forget it. So for me, when people say, ‘Well, how’s this run been?’ Shut up. It was a success. The minute I walked out, that’s when this whole thing was absolutely worth it. Everything else on top of that — come on, I’m not supposed to be doing this.”

“I was told if I fall, I could die, yet here we are. That’s why I say I’m just soaking all of this in and just having a blast with it. There’s no way for me to look at this in any way and go, ‘Well, if…’ You f***ng kidding me? This is all bonus, this is amazing. So, yeah, I’m having the time of my life, in case you couldn’t tell, but it all started there. I’ll take that one with me to the grave for sure.”
