Claudio Castagnoli Was Excited For AEW Continental Classic, Almost Did NJPW G1 Climax

Claudio Castagnoli was excited to compete in the AEW Continental Classic.

The Blackpool Combat Club member was one of the competitors in the Blue League of the inaugural AEW Continental Classic. While he didn’t advance to the finals, he did have notable matches against the likes of Daniel Garcia, Eddie Kingston, Bryan Danielson, and others.

During a recent interview with Denise Salcedo, Castagnoli discussed his thoughts on taking part in the tournament and also revealed how close he was to compete in New Japan’s G1 Climax.

“I was very excited,” Castagnoli said before chuckling. “Right before I joined AEW, I was extremely close, probably a couple days away before doing the G1 for New Japan. I always want to do the G1, and I still owe them one, I feel like. So to do the Continental Classic, I was super excited.

“It also, to me, I feel like I’m at my best when I get into a routine so to speak, and with the Continental Classic, you know you wrestle every week. Then again, looking back, I pretty much wrestled every week multiple times. Then I looked at both groups and all the talent announced, which was awesome because it was like, ‘Yeah, there’s not one person that I wouldn’t want to be in the ring with.'”

Claudio Castagnoli: Everyone Put Their Heart And Soul Into AEW Continental Classic

Claudio Castagnoli continued by highlighting the depth of the Blue League. He also stated that everyone has put their heart and soul into the AEW Continental Classic.

“The Gold group was fun to watch as well, but I feel like the Blue group had so many different styles and competitors in it, and it was so much fun not just me, but I feel like for my fellow competitors as well and for the viewers because you knew what matches you were getting but you didn’t know quite when,” Castagnoli added.

“Then it gets announced and you can look forward to it, and then of course it all came down to the last day, which I feel like was a lot of fun for everybody watching and it’s not quite over yet. It’s been a very good thing for AEW and the fans. It just brought it down to me what wrestling is because it’s fun, it’s sports, it’s storytelling, and you’ve seen all the guys do the interviews and the matches and everybody put their heart and soul into it as you can tell.”

The first AEW Continental Classic winner will be determined at AEW Worlds End on Saturday when Gold League winner Jon Moxley battles Blue League winner Eddie Kingston. WrestleZone will have coverage of the show as it airs.
