Report: Rey Mysterio Close To In-Ring Return

Rey Mysterio is nearing a return to WWE.

Mysterio has been sidelined for the past few months due to tearing his meniscus. F4WOnline.com‘s Dave Meltzer (via The Wrestling Observer Newsletter) is reporting that Mysterio should return in a few weeks. It was noted that Rey hoped to be ready by late January, but he’s still “pretty close” to being back.

Mysterio has not wrestled since WWE Crown Jewel on November 4, 2023, when he lost the WWE United States Championship to Logan Paul. Santos Escobar attacked Rey Mysterio on the following episode of WWE SmackDown, writing him off of television.

In December, Meltzer also reported that Mysterio had recently signed a new three-year contract with WWE.

Wear and tear

Rey revealed he was having surgery and told Konnan on Keepin’ It 100 that it was a result of wear and tear over the years.

“Just wear and tear. This time, it was my right knee,” Mysterio said..” I’ve never had any injuries on my right knee since 97 when I had my first surgery in WCW. The left knee kept on breaking down every other year, sometimes a little bit longer. Numerous ACL tears. The last big surgery I had on my left knee was in 2011.

“This time, you put in all the years, I’ve been favoring the right knee for the left one and finally, I tore the meniscus on my right knee. It’s six to eight weeks. I’m in week four. I’m getting a personal trainer at the beginning of the year that’s going to work with me just so I can work on my lower body and strengthen up my hips, my quads, my legs in general so I can resist. I’ve never had a personal trainer that can train me, kind of like UFC fighters train, so I can use most of my power from the hips down.”

In a subsequent interview with Baker Banter, Mysterio said he hoped to be back for the Royal Rumble, if not a short time later.
