Tony Deppen Learnt Of ROH TV Title Win 20 Minutes Prior To Match

Tony Deppen wasn’t given much notice of his Ring of Honor title win.

On May 3rd 2021, Deppen shocked the world by becoming the ROH World Television Champion. He defeated Tracy Williams on a ROH TV taping to win his first, and so far only, major Championship in wrestling.

This win shocked the fans at home, but also shocked Tony Deppen himself. The event took place during the pandemic, and the lack of fans and the restrictions due to COVID meant it was a less-than-ideal situation.

Deppen recently took to Twitter to mark the anniversary of the title win. He posted two Tweets throwing back to his title win, which took place on his birthday in 2021.

He called it “one of the wildest things of my career.” However, he lamented the lack of fans being the only thing that brought it down.

“4 years ago on my birthday I became @ringofhonor tv champion. Still one of the wildest things of my career. Only thing that would have been better if it wasn’t in front of an empty arena.”

Tony Deppen continued. In his next Tweet, he revealed he didn’t know he was winning the title until 20 minutes before the match. The company then quickly booked him up for the next five months, before sending him out for the iconic title win.

“I didn’t know I was winning until 20 mins prior. They asked me if I could confirm the next 5 months with them and I said yes. They asked 2 more times then goes, “ok congrats you’re up” We still had to wear masks. So they didn’t get to see the utter shock when they told me.”
