Shawn Spears is validated by the NXT North American Championship after winning his first title in WWE.
The former AEW star returned to the company a year ago to wrestle in NXT and has been on fire ever since, cultivating in this title win. In the main event on Tuesday, Shawn Spears challenged Tony D’Angelo for the gold.
Despite fighting valiantly, a back injury to Tony D’Angelo gave Shawn Spears an opportunity to win and he took it. He was named the new NXT North American Championship, his first title ever in WWE.
Speaking in a promo on Twitter afterwards, Shawn Spears celebrated becoming a champion finally. Spears feels validated by the title and told people to enjoy his reign.
Shawn Spears wants you to learn to love him as champion
“Here I stand, the new North American Champion, and you can’t just give it to me—a year to the date since I returned. You can’t just say, ‘Congratulations, you’ve earned it,’ just like everybody else over the last 23 years. You can’t just give it to me, can you?” Shawn Spears said.
“Whether you like it or not, this happened. I am your new North American Champion. Love it. Learn to enjoy it. A man is only as strong as the people behind him, and there is nothing more important than family.”
“This title means a lot. And it proves that I am a top star in NXT. It shows that I’ve climbed the ladder. It also proves that everything I’ve said to Izzy Dame, to Nico Vance, and Brooks Jensen is real. This championship validates it. It’s validated by me. This is only the beginning,” he added.
