Grade: B
Gunther should get an award for how hard he worked tonight to make Jey look like a world-beater. This match was 100 times better than anyone thought it would be. This may have been Jey’s best singles match ever. The journey they took us on in this one was masterful. The underdog Jey had the ring general on his heels the moment the bell rang. Jey ate everything Gunther had and used Gunther’s offense against him. This was a career-defining match for Jey. YEEEEEET!

Grade: C
This match was good, but not WrestleMania good. This would have been a fine Raw main event. It’s nice to see New Day back on top of the tag division after they floundered post-Big E. breakup. The War Raiders work better chasing the titles, so this switch is best for everyone involved.

Winner- Jade Cargill
Grade: C+
This match had a few weird, slow spots (both of which involved Naomi going up top), but beyond that, this match was better than anyone expected it to be. Naomi dug deep into her back tonight and busted out a top rope wheelbarrow bulldog. Cargill hasn’t had many singles matches in WWE, but this is by far the best one she’s had since becoming a pro. The electric chair powerbomb she hit on Naomi made this writer’s back hurt. Hopefully, this isn’t the end of this feud, because there is still a lot of meat on this bone.

Winner and NEW United States Champion, Jacob Fatu!
Grade: B
Solid match. Knight may have hit the move of the night with that BFT moonsault counter. That would have been a great finish, but Fatu could not be denied. No clue what’s next for Knight, but this match was a solid showing for both superstars. Fatu’s combination of speed and strength is rarely seen, and he may be in the main event of this show next year.

Winner- El Grande Americano
After the match, Vikingo helps Fenix to his feet.
Grade: B-
This match was fast-paced and surprisingly hard-hitting between these two. Fenix being a replacement for Rey Mysterio was probably for the best, as Fenix, at this point, could give Americano a better match (not a knock at Mysterio; he’s been hurt a ton and isn’t exactly a spring chicken as the kids say. Americano coming out on top here was a bit of a shock. Still, with WWE purchasing AAA, having a heel, Chad Gable, running around and making a mockery of Lucha could lead to highly entertaining matches. If this doesn’t lead to Americano vs. Vikingo at some point, this writer would be shocked.

Winner and STILL WWE Women’s Champion, Tiffany Stratton!
Grade: C-
This one started a bit shaky but ended strong. Stratton and Flair had a few miscommunications, most notably the weird neckbreaker spot and the unintentional struggle powerbomb mid-match. This match should have been way better than it turned out, with all the seemingly legitimate animosity between these two. Instead of coming across as a grudge match, at times, this looked like something you may see on WWE LFG. Let’s hope Flair and Stratton have a chance to run this back to make up for how this one turned out.

Winner- Seth Rollins
Grade: B+
Rollins came out on the stage dressed like a piece of candy your grandmother probably has in her purse as we speak. This match didn’t need all of the outside-of-the-ring stuff; if anything, the triple threat main event between Oba Femi, Je’Von Evans, and Trick Williams at Stand and Deliver proved that. You can tell a compelling story without trash cans. Besides that, this match was stellar. The Heyman turn was telegraphed, but still incredibly well executed. Rollins winning here made perfect sense and will drive this story forward into Backlash.
The overuse of kicking out of finishes actually worked here, with the amount of animus these three have for each other. Hatred drove each man to levels of aggression we don’t see from each other often. Reigns has been turned on more times than Big Show has turned face to hell. Sign this writer up if this leads to “Trust issues” Regins. As good as this match was, it was the second-best triple threat of the weekend so far.
WWE WrestleMania 41 Night One Review:
WrestleMania delivered a blend of big moments and compelling storytelling. A few matches didn’t live up to the hype, but the main event triple threat between Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, and CM Punk delivered on drama and star power and featured a cleverly executed Heyman betrayal that added emotional weight to an already intense match. Jey Uso’s win over Gunther in arguably his best singles performance elevated him to a new level, while Jacob Fatu’s coronation as United States Champion added legitimacy to his rise (which this writer thinks will lead to next year’s WrestleMania main event.
Rey Fenix and El Grande Americano turned in a surprisingly hard-hitting bout. Jade Cargill and Naomi exceeded moderately low expectations with a physical contest that was Cargill’s best showing to date. The tag title change to New Day was fun, but not WrestleMania caliber. That match was missing Big E being involved in some way. The women’s title match between Tiffany Stratton and Charlotte Flair struggled with pacing and chemistry issues. Despite a few lulls, the highs outweighed the lows, and the show laid strong groundwork for what’s next in the wacky world of WWE. What did you all think of the show? Let us know in the comments!
