Cody Rhodes Reveals The Unwritten Rules Of Pro Wrestling

Cody Rhodes categorizes the rules he thinks can be taken for misdemeanor and straight up felony in the world of professional wrestling.

During a recent appearance on Hot Ones, Cody Rhodes was asked about the lore surrounding unwritten rules in pro wrestling. The American Nightmare paused for a moment before giving his take on what rules can be categorized as misdemeanors and felonies in his line of work.

“A misdemeanor would be if I drink this water or this milk, because these—the legends, the luminaries, Mount Rushmore—are looking down. They look at this dude, you know, ‘We knew he didn’t have it,'” Rhodes explained. “A felony would be there are certain moves you don’t get up from. So if you get hit with a tombstone piledriver, you’re not getting up. Don’t get up.

“Have someone tell you: you can never go in someone’s bag. If you go in someone’s bag in the locker room, even if they said you couldn’t go in their bag, if you are seen going in their bag, that’s felonious. You’re a felon.

“If you sit your family on the opposite side of the hard cam where we can see them, and they’re not reacting to the show, that’s a felony, which would make all the sense in the world. They’re your family. They already are like, ‘Oh, this guy’s fine, he’s coming home tonight.”

Cody brought up a routine for merch movers that require top drawing acts to sign hundreds of autographs before the show, recalling how a popular star once accidentally broke an unspoken backstage rule by interrupting his signing.

“Every night, if you’re doing pretty well, they give you a stack of 8x10s,” he explained. “It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before. If you ever watch John and myself, CM Punk does it as well, hundreds of 8x10s that you’ve got to get signed before doors. So once you’re in stride, a misdemeanor is to come up and try to talk or shake that person’s hand.

“Once they’re in stride, and we’ve got a newbie who’s going to be a huge star, and that’s Bron Breakker, one of the famous Steiner family. The dude comes up, headlocks you, puts you in a hug. Real touchy. That’s a ‘no,’ that’s a crime. That’s a ‘I’m in the midst of this.’ That’s a crime.”
