Sabrina Carpenter stunned at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards, wearing multiple outfits throughout the night.
Carpenter wore a dress to a VMAs after-party that featured multicolored straps with mirrored pieces and sequins. Normally, this wouldn’t be “news” in the pro wrestling world. However, as one fan pointed out, Carpenter’s after-party dress definitely looked like it was inspired by something Shawn Michaels would have worn in the mid-’90s.

The ‘HBK dress’ was inspired by another icon
Despite speculation, the Carpenter’s black, pink and teal dress wasn’t inspired by Shawn Michaels. In fact, the piece was designed by legendary fashion designer Bob Mackie, and it was an homage to the same one that Cher wore during a performance of “Shame Shame Shame” with Tina Turner in 1975. Turner also wore a matching dress during the performance, which took place on “The Cher Show.”
Mackie praised Carpenter for wearing multiple pieces of his at the VMAs, including the “Swamp Dress” from his 1986 collection. “The fully embellished cocktail dress is multicolor sequin and navy bugle beaded on black silk with an asymmetric fringe hem,” Mackie said about the “Swamp Dress” on Instagram. Mackie also congratulated Carpenter for her Album of the Year win.
This isn’t the first time Carpenter has been compared to a WWE personality. She also wore a coat to the 2025 Met Gala that drew comparisons to Gunther. The look was so popular on social media that the “Espresso” singer earned the nickname “Cunther.” Carpenter also served as the inspiration for Blake Monroe’s WWE debut, borrowing from the singer’s Short N Sweet tour.
