Athena is the latest AEW/ROH performer who will be taking some time off.
The current ROH World Champion recently surpassed 1,000 days in her title reign. However, a new report reveals that she will be taking several weeks off. This is the latest major name in the company set to miss time, as Kenny Omega, Will Ospreay and Swerve Strickland are all currently missing time for various reasons.
Earlier this week, AEW’s Tony Khan addressed a potential Women’s Continental Classic tournament. Khan said he would be open to the idea if the roster was healthy enough to field a proper bracket. Naturally, this led to speculation about who on the AEW roster was injured.
Fightful (via Fightful Select) is now reporting that AEW sources indicated that ROH World Champion Athena is taking time off. It’s unclear why she’s taking time off. The outlet noted that they were not explicitly told it’s due to injury or just time off. However, it was stated that Athena will be out of the ring for “about 5-6 weeks.”
Athena’s last match was a successful ROH World title defense against Mina Shirakawa at ROH Death Before Dishonor on August 29. That match guaranteed her title reign would surpass 1,000 days. Prior to that, the “Fallen Goddess” lost to AEW Women’s Champion Toni Storm at Forbidden Door in London. Her last television match was a tag team win with Mercedes Moné against Alex Windsor and Toni Storm on the August 20 episode of Dynamite.
The champion has not commented on the report or her status. However, one of her latest posts on social media implied that her reign as “Forever Champion” will continue.
