Taz Taking Extended Hiatus From AEW Due To Upcoming Surgery

Taz says he’s going to be off for a bit while he recovers from an upcoming surgery.

On Wednesday, Taz announced that he will be having a total shoulder replacement surgery in the near future. The AEW color commentator did not specifically say how long he would miss, but said he’ll be off Dynamite “for some time.”

“I will be having total shoulder replacement surgery in a short time. Therefore I will be off AEW Dynamite for some time. See you soon,” Taz wrote on Twitter/X.

It’s unclear how AEW will deal with Taz’s absence on the commentary team. Excalibur, Taz, and Bryan Danielson made up the most recent three-man lineup, but Tony Schiavone has also been part of the mix.

Taz had knee replacement surgery last year

Earlier this year, Taz missed AEW x Forbidden Door due to a combination of doctor’s appointments and imaging tests related to some future surgeries, along with his new knee not cooperating with long flights.

Taz had knee replacement surgery in 2024. He said that he did everything he could do avoid that surgery, but it was affecting his ability to walk. However, he said at the time that the arthritis in his knee was gone, and managed it with physical therapy.

“The knee replacement thing, I’m recovering. I’m doing a lot of physical therapy now, three days a week. I do a lot of home therapy too,” Taz said. “You gotta really work out that prosthetic and the quad and all that. I was always nervous to get it done, but I’m only five weeks out, and if you need it, get it done because I already feel relief. The arthritis is gone. It’s nice.”
