James Gunn is proud of his work in the season 2 finale of Peacemaker, but admits that he was initially uncomfortable about having to direct John Cena kissing his wife on the set.
Gunn shared his comments during a recent episode of the official Peacemaker podcast released after the season two finale aired. The episode saw John Cena’s Christopher Smith/Peacemaker kiss Amelia Harcourt, played by his wife, Jennifer Holland.
During the episode, Holland said it must be weird seeing your wife kissing another man on camera. However, she said it doesn’t register as weird for her, noting that it feels very “technical” for her. Gunn said that this particular sequence was especially technical due to the phantom camera and different angles they needed to shoot, which happened in multiple takes.
“And it wasn’t only that I had to direct you kissing a man, it was that I had to direct you kissing a man in front of 200, 300 extras or more, a lot of whom were fans,” Gunn explained. “So it was just the whole thing was kinda weird before it happened. I was uncomfortable about it, admittedly.
“I was like, ‘I don’t want to do this.’ But then once we were doing it, I was [OK], I didn’t give a shit,” Gunn added. “I was looking at the kiss as like I’m f*ckin’ loving it because [it was] these beautiful shots. Some of our best shots ever from the series are in that sequence.”
Jennifer Holland said the scene couldn’t have been easy for John Cena either
“By the way, I’m sure it wasn’t great for John either,” Holland replied. “His wife, Shay, is like down on the [set].”
“Shay was sitting beside me,” Gunn said. “Shay was with me the whole time watching it. So yeah, Shay was hanging out with me while I was directing because it was warmer up there, and she was watching on the monitor.”
Gunn recently said that some of the characters from Peacemaker will move on to be seen in other DC Universe projects. He was non-committal about saying Peacemaker would get a third season. However, he also said he’s not saying it won’t happen in the future, either.
Since the season two finale aired, many fans have speculated that Cena’s character will play a big role in the next Superman film, Man of Tomorrow. Gunn also said that the season 2 finale sets up Peacemaker to have a wider role in the DCU, noting how important the character is to him.
