The Undertaker has opened up about why he never broke character in public.
Until his retirement, The Undertaker was known for not breaking kayfabe inside and outside the ring, and during a recent interview on the 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast, The Deadman revealed why he protected his character even when he was in public.
When host Tom Segura asked The Undertaker if he enjoyed performing the Deadman gimmick, the WWE Hall of Famer replied that when he became The Undertaker, he wanted people to see him in the character even when he was in public.
“It paid off, I guess. Once I started being The Undertaker, everything was focused around that character. I wanted people, like I knew they knew, like, ‘oh, he’s not really dead,’ right? But I wanted people to, when they saw me even in public, I wanted people to always go like, ‘no, I ain’t f***ing with that guy!’
“There’s something different, and so I didn’t do a lot of media, I didn’t do a lot of interactions, and I lived, you know, people talk about all the time like, ‘how did you live that character?’ Like, now I’ve got yellow tennis shoes on, in jeans. Like, if you saw me, I didn’t have my wrestling gear on, but if you saw me in the airport, there’d be no doubt who that was. I was always dressed in black. I kept it going, and I lived it.”
The Undertaker Wanted To Protect The Uniqueness Of The Character
The Undertaker also said that he didn’t want a character so unique in television to get ruined in real life just because he wanted to wear regular clothes in public.
“The character is so unique and so different, like just in my mind, I didn’t want people to see that on TV, and like, ‘whoa, that’s death!’ And then see me somewhere out in public with a Hawaiian shirt on, and a fedora, and go like, ‘uhh, he’s bulls**t.”
