Aleister Black says an on-screen partnership with his wife, Zelina Vega, in WWE could’ve happened four years ago.
Black recently paired up with Zelina Vega on WWE television. Vega helped her husband defeat Damian Priest in a Last Man Standing match on the October 10 episode of SmackDown. It marked the first time the real-life couple got to work together in WWE.
Aleister Black recently spoke with Rick Ucchino of The Takedown on SI. During the interview, Black revealed that he had pitched the idea to WWE back in 2021, before he was released.
“We started shooting little vignettes for it, and we started creating outfits for it,” Black said. “That first mask that I ever wore when I worked with [AEW] was actually one of the masks that was utilized. If you remember the Dark Father character that was at the end of my initial run [with WWE], that would eventually see my wife joining me… that was one of the pitches.”
Aleister Black Revealed That Triple H Was Initially Hesitant To Have Him Pair With Zelina Vega On TV
Later in the interview, Black revealed that Triple H wasn’t a fan of pairing them together at first. However, the WWE CCO changed his mind after seeing the success of CM Punk and Seth Rollins pairing up with their real-life partners, AJ Lee and Becky Lynch.
“When I got back, the conversation arose again and initially [Triple H] was not really into it,” Black revealed. “But I think that with the success of AJ [Lee] and CM Punk, and Seth and Becky, I think that he kinda went like, you know what, this might actually really, really work.”
Aleister Black then revealed that after watching the finish of his match against Damian Priest and seeing all the positive fan reviews, Triple H became fully invested in the storyline.
“He was completely sold on it and he really liked it,” Black continued. “And then it kind of started building from there [during] those last two, three weeks. Where we’re now looking at the presentation that you saw last week, and slowly but surely we’re adding elements. This is a work in progress.”
