Rey Fenix opened up about how he learned of his WrestleMania 41 match at the last moment.
Rey Fenix replaced an injured Rey Mysterio to take on El Grande Americano at WrestleMania 41 night one. Speaking at the Ringside Fest 2025, the former AEW World Tag Team Champion revealed that he didn’t know about the match until the morning of the show.
“I have no words to explain,” Rey Fenix began. “That night was very incredible. I just woke up the next day, and I got the news like, ‘Hey, you have to wrestle today.’ I was like, ‘Oh, what? Where?’ Like, at WrestleMania. I say, ‘Really?’ They said, ‘Yeah, you have to wrestle in WrestleMania tonight. So, be prepared.’ That was a lot, like I said, a lot of feelings. That was the last moment, the last minute.”
When asked if he was prepared for it, Rey Fenix said, “Yeah, I was nowhere. I remember we have the conference for AAA, so I was in the hotel waiting for the car to go to the conference. So over there, like 11 in the morning, someone came to me and asked, ‘Hey, you have your gear with you?’ I said, ‘No, I got the conference only.’ He’s like, ‘Okay, you need it because you have to wrestle tonight. You’re going to replace Rey Mysterio for the injury. So, go for your stuff.’
Luckily, Rey Fenix Was Prepared
Fortunately, Rey Fenix had the habit of always carrying two sets of wrestling gear with him at all times. So he got back to his hotel room, picked up the extra gear, and went straight to the Allegiant Stadium. He also said the moment he made his entrance was when he got the chance to look at the stage and the ring.
“I have no chance to jump in the ring before the show,” Rey Fenix continued. “I have no chance to jump to the stage, I have no chance for nothing. For some reason, I have this red gear with me. I always like to bring two different gears for every match, every night. Because sometimes I say, like, ‘Oh, maybe this, maybe this one.’ So I always have two options for every match.
“The night before we did SmackDown. That was when Rey Mysterio get the injury. So I wear the orange one from the debut, and I keep the red one. So the next day was like, ‘I never think that’s going to happen, but I’ll be ready, I have another gear, I have another jacket. So, just got back to the hotel room, and take my stuff so quick.
“I did the conference, and I go back to the arena and just prepared myself for the match. But yeah, that was incredible. I have no chance to jump to the stage, I have no chance to jump in the ring before the show. So, when I did my entrance, that was the first time in the day I see the stage, I see the arena, I see the ring. So, that was very impressive for me, Rey Fenix said.
