A never-before-seen exchange between Owen Hart and The British Bulldog has been revealed.
At WCW Fall Brawl: War Games 1998, a trap door was built into one of the rings for the Ultimate Warrior’s entrance in the show’s main event. Unfortunately, the participants in the opening match — The British Bulldog, Jim Neidhart, Alex Wright, and Disco Inferno — were unaware of its existence, leading to a series of injuries. Bulldog, also known as Davey Boy Smith, suffered a particularly devastating back injury that resulted in a staph infection, and later, his release from WCW.
Years later, Bulldog’s daughter, Georgia, has revealed (via X) that he received frequent visits from his former brother-in-law, Owen Hart, in the months following his injury. Georgia also shared a letter handwritten by Owen to her father dated April 1999, when Bulldog lay in a Calgary hospital recovering from his fractured back and staph infection.
“Bulldog, I came by to see you 2:10pm Tuesday but I missed you,” Owen wrote, identifying the hospital as Rockyview Hospital. “I hope you’re better soon. Sorry you’ve been through such bad lucky lately, I’ll try to visit you again before I leave on Friday. Love Owen.”
Georgia Adds More Context
Georgia accompanied the image of the letter by writing, “A letter written by my uncle Owen to my dad, while Davey was in the hospital in Calgary- April, 1999. Owen always made an effort to visit my dad regularly when my dad was suffering with his staph infection where his back was broken. This was right when he was released from WCW, and Owen was instrumental in negotiations with Davey and Vince for Davey’s WWF return.”
In September 1999, Bulldog returned to in-ring action as an WWF/WWE Hardcore Championship opponent for The Big Bossman on SmackDown. Sadly, Owen wasn’t there to see it as he died in May 1999 after a harness malfunction resulting in him falling more 70 feet into the WWE ring below.
