Gunther views John Cena’s last match as a “picture-perfect” ending to a career, and doesn’t see why fans are so upset over it.
TMZ’s Inside The Ring spoke with Gunther after he beat John Cena in his retirement match at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event. Host Branson Quirke asked The Ring General about the controversial reaction to the match, as some fans believe Cena should have won his last match, or at least didn’t want him to tap out.
“Suck it up,” he said with a laugh. “In German, we’ve got a saying: Everything’s got an end, but a sausage’s got two. So if you’ve been naive to think that all of the ‘Never Give Up’ stuff is going to hold up forever, then blame yourself. You’ve been naive enough.”
Gunther believes John Cena got the perfect ending to his career
Gunther then explained why he saw the situation as an overall positive for Cena, who enjoyed a 20-plus-year career in WWE. He noted that Cena wrote his own ending, and fans just need to move on.
“I guess [I’m happy] for him personally. It’s objectively like a picture-perfect ending for a career. The guy was on top for 25 years or something. Now he called it quits, it was his own decision to say ‘OK, that’s my tour’ and he’s retiring now a made man, set up for life,” Gunther explained. “I think that’s the ideal outcome you would wish for every wrestler when they end their career, so I don’t know what everyone is crying about, actually, to be honest. I don’t know, it’s the ultimately achievable outcome, I think. People need to learn to live with that. I don’t think it was a sad occasion. Life goes on.”
Asked if he wanted to send WWE fans a message, perhaps to give them peace of mind, Gunther told them to “stop crying,” adding that it will be OK because life goes on.
