Royce Keys has revealed the unusual lengths WWE went to in order to protect the surprise of his Royal Rumble 2026 debut — including turning his hotel room into a private gym.
Speaking to Stephanie McMahon on the What’s Your Story? podcast, the newest SmackDown star detailed how the company kept him hidden in Riyadh ahead of the event.
WWE placed Keys in what he described as a “hidden room” at the same talent hotel as the rest of the roster. They wanted to ensure he stayed close to the venue without the fans, media, or even most wrestlers catching a sight of him.
For a powerlifter like Royce Keys, the secrecy presented one immediate problem.
After a long travel day, he wanted to use the hotel gym to stay true to his routine. He approached Triple H for permission, already sensing the answer.
“I love working out, it’s a stress reliever for me,” Keys said. “I’m talking to Paul like, ‘Hey… do you think I can maybe use the hotel gym?’” He recalled several seconds of silence before being told, “We don’t want you to be seen, you’re a surprise.”
WWE Took No Chances With Royce Keys’ Royal Rumble Debut Secrecy
Rather than risk exposure, Triple H arranged for the delivery of workout equipment directly to Keys’ room. A bench press, resistance bands, and dumbbells were sent up so he could train without stepping into a public space.
“He took care of me,” Keys added.
The secrecy paid off. Keys entered the Men’s Royal Rumble at No. 14 and immediately made an impact by eliminating Damian Priest before Bronson Reed eliminated him. The debut also marked his official name change from Powerhouse Hobbs to Royce Keys. The name change emerges as a tribute to his youngest son and his late mother’s maiden name.
Now awaiting his official SmackDown rollout, Keys has already competed in a dark match against Nathan Frazer in Dallas. As WrestleMania season heats up, WWE proved that sometimes protecting a surprise means bench-pressing the details behind closed doors.
