A reflection from a WWE Hall of Famer has brought renewed attention to the legacy of one of wrestling’s most iconic figures. Moreover, he shed light on how the industry remembers him.
Speaking in a recent interview, Sgt. Slaughter revisited the passing of The Iron Sheik in 2023. He shared a personal memory that has since sparked conversation.
While tributes poured in across the wrestling world at the time, Slaughter’s account paints a very different picture of what happened behind the scenes.
Sgt. Slaughter Shares Emotional Account of Iron Sheik’s Funeral
During an interview with Going Ringside, Sgt. Slaughter revealed that he was the only professional wrestler in attendance at The Iron Sheik’s funeral.
“Two years ago, he passed… I was the only wrestler at his funeral, which I thought was pretty horrendous,” Slaughter said.
He added that the situation was even more surprising given the location. The funeral took place in Atlanta, a city where many wrestlers reside, which made the absence stand out even more.
“He lived in Atlanta, where all the wrestlers lived. So I thought that was kind of a slap in the face,” Slaughter continued.
Slaughter also emphasized the impact The Iron Sheik had on the wrestling business. He noted that Sheik contributed significantly not only to his peers but to the growth of professional wrestling as a whole.
The two shared a long history dating back decades, including their memorable rivalry in the 1980s. Slaughter also inducted The Iron Sheik into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005.
The Iron Sheik, who passed away in June 2023 at the age of 81, remains one of the most recognizable villains in wrestling history. Known for his intensity and larger-than-life persona, he helped shape an era that still influences the industry today.
Slaughter’s comments serve as a reminder that while in-ring legacies are often celebrated loudly, the moments away from the spotlight can sometimes tell a different story — one that, in this case, left a lasting impression.
