The world of pro wrestling could have been very different if Tony Khan had bought WWE in 2023. Recently, he has spoken about his reported $6.9 billion offer to the company, which is a big “what if” moment in the wrestling business.
After Vince McMahon stepped down in 2022 due to misconduct allegations, WWE went through an uncertain phase. Even after leaving, McMahon retained control, and he pushed the company toward a sale. This led to a lot of interest from big investors.
Tony Khan calls his WWE valuation a ‘reasonable number’
Tony Khan was one of the people who made a bid. He confirmed this during an appearance on The Coach & Bro. Court documents later showed that his offer came through a company called Base 10, valued at around $6.9 billion.
Khan said he joined the bidding process because he didn’t want to miss the chance to purchase in case of a sale. He also believed his offer was fair at the time. Moreover, he admitted he would have regretted it if the company had sold for less and he hadn’t tried an acquisition.
“I was very interested in the process. And I think that if there was going to be a sale, I would at least wanted the chance to be involved. If it had gone for any less than that, I would have really kicked myself,” Khan said.
“I don’t have any complaints about that process from my side right now that I want to talk about right now. I do think there were some stuff to that. And while respecting to the confidentiality of the whole thing, I also would say that at the time it seemed like to me, just reiterating, if it had gone for any less, I would have really beat myself up. Like, ‘Why wouldn’t you put in a bid?’ I thought that was a very reasonable number that I put in,” Khan added.
In the end, Endeavor won the deal with a much bigger offer of $9.3 billion. The sale came to light during WrestleMania 39 weekend. Later, WWE merged with the UFC to form TKO Group Holdings.
Because the deal didn’t happen, WWE and AEW are still separate, and their rivalry continues. Still, the idea of Khan owning WWE is something fans still think about.
