Shawn Michaels opens up about struggling to embrace first WWE Title win.
Shawn Michaels recently reflected on his first WWE Championship victory and admitted he struggled to fully appreciate the moment.
“The Heartbreak Kid” captured his first of four WWE world titles at WrestleMania XII, defeating Bret Hart in a historic 60-Minute Iron Man Match.
Michaels revisited that milestone in a new Peacock documentary, The Heartbreak Kid: Becoming Shawn Michaels. During the film, he revealed that despite being encouraged to enjoy the moment, he was unable to do so due to frustration over how things played out.
“I can remember being told, ‘I want you to enjoy this.’ But I didn’t have the ability to do that. Earl not being able to get the belt on and that bothering me, I just remember [pushing him away] like, ‘Just stop it.’ I did not have the ability to enjoy that moment because it didn’t go exactly the way that I had wanted it too. It wasn’t a good attitude to have. I was a gloomy Gus, I mean, if nothing else, that’s putting it lightly.”
The Heartbreak Kid: Becoming Shawn Michaels chronicles Michaels’ legendary 22-year career, including his rise from one-half of The Rockers to his current role overseeing creative for WWE NXT. The documentary also explores his personal struggles and eventual comeback. It is currently streaming on Peacock.
