AEW’s Chris Jericho Praised as Genre-Bending Pioneer For Wrestlers by Chavo Guerrero

Chavo Guerrero was happy to get a shot at working with an old friend on a new project.

Guerrero is the lead wrestling consultant on Apple TV’s Margo’s Got Money Troubles. He spoke with WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard about his role on the show, as well as reuniting on the set with AEW star Chris Jericho.

Guerrero considers himself fortunate to work with A-list names such as Nicole Kidman and Nick Offerman, noting how they “brought their A-game” to the set. He also praised Jericho for making it feel like a night off, noting how much Jericho has done for wrestlers looking to break out into other genres.

Working with Chris Jericho was like getting a night off

“Being on set for all that was really cool. I got to work with a very old friend of mine, Chris Jericho, in a completely different setting than pro wrestling,” Chavo Guerrero explained. “It was more like a night off for me with him. I didn’t really have to do much. It was basically just, ‘do your thing.’ It was really cool to work with an old buddy of mine and kind of take that part of the night off.

“As far as being behind the camera with the director and making sure Nick looks his best and Nicole looks her best, that’s just part of it. They’re pros at what they do, I’m pro at what I do, and we kind of mesh it together to get the best shots possible. With Jericho, it was different,” he added. “He’s done this before, so if anything, it was more like, ‘Hey man, his eyes are the camera. This camera is playing really well. Watch B camera when you deliver that line. This camera is playing well, just FYI.’ So that’s kind of what I did with him.

“Chris is so multi-talented, man. He is one of those guys who followed his dreams in rock and roll and wrestling. He’s a kid from Winnipeg who, like I said, started with wrestling and music, and that eventually led into acting,” Chavo said. “He just kind of followed wherever it’s taken him. He’s definitely a pioneer, not just in wrestling, but for wrestlers in other genres as well.”

Chavo Guerrero highlights the appeal of Margo’s Got Money Troubles

Guerrero says Margo being an A24 production on Apple TV could be enough of a selling point itself. However, he praised the big-name cast, as well as the story, noting how it’s not just a pro wrestling show, but an emotional family story that just happens to feature pro wrestling.

“You could stop right there because both of those companies bring A-list movies and A-list series. Anything on Apple is just so good,” Chavo said. “Then you throw in the actors — Nicole Kidman, Elle Fanning, Michelle Pfeiffer, Nick Offerman. I could stop there too. But then you start talking about the story itself, it’s a family feel-good story that’s funny and moving. There’s just so much there. It’s so easy to sell this show.

“The story is great. Just the story in general, even without wrestling being in it, it doesn’t really matter if you’re a wrestling fan or not. You’re just going to watch a really well-done show with great writing, great acting, great directing, and great wrestling coordination.”

Margo’s Got Money Troubles also has a familiar feel for Chavo Guerrero

Guerrero also noted how the title character’s issues with her pro wrestling father, played by Offerman, are relatable to his own life. Guerrero is a legacy talent who didn’t see his father much unless he went on the road too.

“My father chose to keep us centered in Orange County, California, and we stayed there while he traveled. So in a sense, I got to have a somewhat normal life, but my dad wasn’t there. That was the price I had to pay for what we did,” he pointed out. “If you look at Margo’s story, it’s kind of the same thing. You have an estranged father who was a wrestler on the road. His daughter knows him, but doesn’t really know him.”

Margo’s Got Money Troubles is streaming now on Apple TV+, with new episodes releasing on Wednesdays.
