The concept of wrestler’s court is not a new one to fans of pro wrestling. Recently, legend Matt Hardy revealed a time both he and his brother had to stand trial.
Speaking to Ariel Helwani recently, Hardy opened up about a time where he and Jeff Hardy were put on trial for accidentally stealing a first-class ticket from Kane years ago. According to Hardy, the story started when they won the then WWF World Tag Team Championships, and manager Michael Hayes splurged and got them first-class tickets on the way home, even though they tried to say no.
“We actually were in Fayetteville, North Carolina. We were wrestling the APA, The Acolytes, JBL, Bradshaw at the time, and Ron Simmons,” said Hardy. “And we defeated them in Fayetteville, North Carolina, which is 30 minutes from where we live, from the Hardy compound. But we got on a plane the next day in Raleigh going up here. I’ll never forget, we get to the airport, and Michael Hayes was there, which was our manager, and in many ways, we call him our wrestling daddy.
“He said ‘Hey, guys, I got a surprise. You guys are the champions.’ He said, ‘Guess what? Because I’m a million-mile Delta guy, I got you guys upgraded. You guys are in first class.’ We’re like, ‘No, no, no, no, no. We’re good, we’re fine. We don’t want that, we don’t need that.'”
Matt Hardy says they inadvertently stole Kane’s seat
Hardy went on to explain how Hayes said there were two empty seats on the plane, so it was okay. Matt noted he and Jeff were nervous on the flight, but thought it might be okay since they were about to take off. Before that, though, the flight was held so one man could join. That ended up being Kane, who was forced to sit in coach as a result. When they eventually landed, Hardy noted JBL “indicted” them, and then put the two on trial.
“So we were sitting there, and I remember he was doing a spiel,” said Hardy. “And he said, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you to Matt and Jeff Hardy, two kids who’ve been here for a cup of coffee. And, I’ll be honest, I think they’re monsters.’ He said, ‘Kane is a former world champion, a guy who carries the company, who sells tickets, sells pay-per-views, and they took his first class seat, and they just threw it out the window.'”
The legend then revealed that eventually, JBL told the pair they would actually be treating Hayes with the worst “punishment,” and were just messing with the brothers. Still, though, Hardy revealed they ended up having to buy Kane lunch for a week. Hayes was left carrying Kane’s luggage for a month.
