One of wrestling’s biggest modern dream matches reportedly came much closer to reality than fans ever knew.
According to new comments from Matt Jackson, members of The Elite were actively working behind the scenes in 2018 to make a crossover clash with The New Day happen. Interestingly, the discussions even reached Triple H directly.
Speaking on the Being The Elite YouTube channel, while revisiting BTE Episode 107, Jackson revealed that conversations involving The Young Bucks, Kenny Omega, and WWE became far more serious than online speculation suggested at the time.
“We truly were trying to get a New Day, Young Bucks, Kenny match to happen,” Jackson said. “We got on the phone to Triple H and we talked and said, ‘We would really like to do this match.’”
According to Jackson, both sides were making efforts internally to see whether the long-discussed showdown could become reality.
However, he admitted the talks may not have been entirely focused on the match itself.
Jackson explained that he believed Triple H was likely more interested in recruiting The Young Bucks to WWE than simply opening the forbidden door for one match.
Still, the discussions were legitimate enough that The Elite thought the bout had a real chance of happening before plans eventually stalled. Sometimes, even dream matches can’t quite make the hot tag.
The Elite vs. The New Day still remains a wrestling “what if”
For years, The Elite and The New Day teased fans online with references, jokes, and crossover hints that fueled demand for a future match involving Omega, Matt and Nick Jackson against Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods, and Big E.
Back in early 2024, Kingston also acknowledged that facing The Young Bucks remained one of his personal dream matches. He pointed to WWE previously allowing crossover appearances involving talent connected to other promotions, including Mickie James during her TNA Wrestling run.
Although the match never happened, Jackson’s latest comments have once again revived discussion around one of wrestling’s biggest missed opportunities. With crossover conversations becoming more common across the industry, the idea may no longer be completely off the table.
