WWE‘s IYO SKY reveals why she and new NXT star Naraku waited so long to get married.
WWE Superstars IYO SKY and Naraku (FKA EVIL in NJPW) announced their marriage on the Japanese television documentary Jônestu Tairiku and later through a joint statement on social media. Speaking in the same documentary, SKY revealed why she and the new NXT star waited so long to get married despite being together for 10 years.
IYO SKY noted that she felt marrying and fully stepping into that shared identity would create a psychological backup plan, and that the comfort of a safety net might prevent her from pushing herself harder in her work as a wrestler. She wanted to make herself happy through her own strength in her career before getting married.
“I haven’t told my husband this, but if I took on the form of marriage, it might feel like I had a backup, a place to go back to. Like I’d gain another identity, something separate, and maybe that would make me feel too at ease, like I wouldn’t be able to push as hard in my work. So I felt I couldn’t go through with the marriage yet,” IYO SKY revealed.
“I want to become happy through my own strength. Of course, my husband gives me happiness too. He gives me a sense of security, and truly, I feel glad I married him. But as Io Shirai or as IYO SKY, as a pro wrestler, the only one who can make me happy is myself. So I’m working to make both myself and those around me happy,” she said.
