Steve Austin Reveals Truth Behind Retiring At His WWE Peak

‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin infamously retired from the world of wrestling at an earlier age. According to the legend, he never really had a plan for his future moves.

Recently, Brad Gilmore shared an interview from his and Booker T‘s podcast The Hall of Fame from 2021 with Austin. In it, the group talks about Austin’s surprise exit from WWE, when he retired in 2003. In the interview, which took place ahead of Austin’s eventual return and final match against Kevin Owens at WWE WrestleMania 38, he revealed he had no real idea he’d still be as popular as he is now.

“I never figured I’d be doing what I’m doing now,” Austin said. “When I pulled myself out of the business book, that was the hardest decision I ever made. It took me three years to come to grips with that. I’ve told it many times, I went out to LA, thought I wanted to get into acting. I didn’t like acting, but it was a means to an end, and I found hosting.”

Austin went on to talk about how he never had a “great exit strategy” for leaving the company. At the time of his retirement, Austin had been having lingering neck and knee injuries, which forced him to step away from the company. The legend has previously spoken about how he could have planned his retirement better. However, it’s worked out for him, as he remains as popular as ever, and still very much involved in wrestling culture.
