Mick Foley shared how his conversation with WWE went after he told them he was leaving over the company’s link to Donald Trump.
During an appearance on the Ariel Helwani Show, new AEW star Mick Foley explained why he left WWE due to the promotion’s connection to Donald Trump. Foley credited Trump’s controversial statement about the murder of Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, as being the straw that broke the camel’s back and led to him severing ties with the company.
Helwani asked how the company reacted to his controversial decision. Foley detailed a couple of phone calls he made to unnamed WWE employees. Foley said one top name, who he declined to name, tried to reason with him, but he stood firm and cut ties.
“Well, the first [reaction] was ‘I respect your stance, and I’ll tell the people in charge.’ And then I received a call from someone really high up. I don’t know if he wants me to mention his name. But he was saying, ‘Paul is just on the [Presidential Physical Fitness panel]. And he said, ‘And Linda hasn’t worked in WWE in X amount of years.’”
Mick Foley says he didn’t say goodbye to WWE forever
Foley said that’s true in theory. However, he also recalled seeing Triple H on TV during one of Donald Trump’s press conferences on policy. He also pointed out how Linda McMahon might not work there anymore. Despite that, her surname is still McMahon, and the association is still there.
“Then I said, ‘Come on, five people in the Oval Office took a Stunner.’ And he did appreciate it, he said he respected it. I didn’t close the door forever; I said in my announcement [my boycott would last] as long as he’s in office. I think more and more people are realizing that some of the things that he’s doing is just cruelty for the sake of cruelty and enriching himself. I’m not here to talk politics, so let’s skip this after here, but it is the reason I left WWE.”
Foley said that he just wants people to know that it’s never too late to do the right thing. People could have made their voices heard before Trump was elected again. Foley said they didn’t, but it’s still a great time to be heard. Foley speculated that Trump’s approval ratings dropping could force him to change, but he’s not counting on it.
“He’s definitely a different type of person, and I don’t mean that in a good way,” Foley added.
