John Cena Wore Jorts in WWE For One Big Reason

Most professional wrestlers compete in singlets, tights, or trunks. In the case of 17-time world champion John Cena, though, he famously sported jorts. You’ve heard the jokes about Cena’s trademark look, which he kept throughout his WWE career until his retirement in 2025.

According to Cena, this fashion decision can be attributed to one big thing.

“If you look at my other options, it is just underwear,” Cena told The Late Late Show with James Corden. “So I wanted to do some sort of street clothes because my persona was a tough wannabe rapper kid from the mean streets of West Newbury. Tough to do that in your underwear, so I also wear sneakers. Most wear calf high or knee high leather boots. I am pretty much in street clothes and I chose denim because you don’t blow the crotch out of the denim.

John Cena says he tried wearing cargo shorts, but that backfired on him

“I tried cargo pants, and in a front of the world a few times, here I am trying to put my life on the line with a Superstar that I’m having a match with and everybody is just looking at my d***. So denim is a safe play, and they are back in so I kind of stood the test of time.”

Last December, Cena hung up his jean shorts for good when he competed in his final wrestling match at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event. For this occasion, Cena faced “The Ring General” Gunther, who went on to make the legendary WWE star tap out to a sleeper hold. In his WWE appearances since retiring, Cena has donned fancy suits.

John Cena recently opened up about the likelihood that he will wrestle again, explaining why it would be “financial suicide” for anyone who invested money trying to make it happen.
