Paul Heyman recently reflected on a former WWE star could have become a major rival for Brock Lesnar. However, he feels the company never fully capitalized on that potential.
Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman have been linked for decades. Together, they were involved in major rivalries with stars such as The Undertaker, Triple H, John Cena, Randy Orton and more. However, Heyman recently revealed that he once believed Cesaro, now known as Claudio Castagnoli, was destined for a major feud with Lesnar.
Paul Heyman says WWE missed a huge opportunity with Cesaro
Speaking on Insight With Chris Van Vliet, Heyman discussed WWE’s plans for Curtis Axel and Cesaro during their time as Paul Heyman Guys. Heyman admitted he never knew of any long-term plans.
He said, “Not, I don’t believe so. If there was, I was never clued in on it.” He recalled quickly realizing what would happen with Cesaro once Brock Lesnar returned. “And I could tell by the third week I was with Cesaro, ‘Oh, I understand what we’re doing here. I get it. I see how this is going to play out.’ As soon as Brock is back, this is going to get discarded because if Cesaro had any weakness, maybe it’s his promos aren’t strong enough. Pair him with Paul Heyman, oh my gosh, he’s unstoppable.”
He argued that WWE never gave the former star a real chance to showcase his personality. “See, but I think Cesaro was fascinating on the microphone if he were given the opportunity to demonstrate his skills. The man spoke five languages fluently.”
“So I think Cesaro could have been a fascinating promo if he was given the chance to do that in WWE. He wasn’t. And that’s our fault. That’s a major fumble. That was a crime committed against the career of Cesaro and a crime committed against the audience for not allowing this gifted performer to do what, at the time, certainly he could do better than most anybody else on the face of the planet.”
“And by the way, when you realize what he’s capable of, what an opponent he could have been for Brock Lesnar had I turned on Cesaro and we built him up to be a threat to Brock, the matches the two of them could have had are mind-boggling. A tremendously wasted opportunity, and no one for us to blame but ourselves, including me.”
