Tony Schiavone has opened up about the differences between working under Tony Khan and the production style long associated with Vince McMahon, admitting that the former WWE Chairman’s approach would not have suited him.
The veteran broadcaster discussed the topic on his What Happened When podcast while reflecting on how communication works behind the commentary desk during AEW broadcasts.
His comments offered an interesting look at two very different philosophies when it comes to producing wrestling announcers.
Tony Schiavone compares Tony Khan and Vince McMahon’s commentary styles
When asked what Tony Khan typically says through his headset during major matches, Schiavone explained that the AEW President often provides cues, reminders, and encouragement rather than constant direction.
“Well, coach, I don’t know if he would tell me things other than giving me lines to say. ‘This is an incredible match. We’ve got so-and-so coming up.’”
According to Schiavone, Khan is also quick to praise strong performances from the commentary team.
“A lot of times, he’ll coach me up. He’ll say, ‘Doing a great job. Keep it up. Both of you are doing a great job.’ One time, he told Nigel, ‘You guys are just doing sensational. Just keep it up.’”
That doesn’t mean Khan never offers corrections. Schiavone noted that he occasionally receives reminders to increase the energy level when needed.
“Sometimes, he’ll say, ‘Get the excitement back up. Get the excitement back up,’ because he wants you to be exciting.”
The conversation eventually shifted to Vince McMahon’s well-known headset presence. Schiavone made it clear that style would have been difficult for him to handle.
“I’ve heard, and I know you have, Conrad, I guess it’s well known that when Vince would produce you, he would actually get on your ass. That wouldn’t work for me. I would not do well with that. I would not do well with that.”
For Schiavone, the difference appears crystal clear. After decades in the wrestling business, he’s found a commentary environment that suits him, and it sounds like AEW’s approach is far more in line with his style behind the microphone.
