Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins are officially set to collide at SummerSlam. Nevertheless, one line from their latest RAW confrontation has already sparked debate among longtime WWE fans.
Rollins claimed Reigns has never been able to beat him, even though WWE history tells a slightly different story.
The comment added another layer to one of WWE’s longest-running rivalries. Moreover, it also left fans revisiting the record books before the two former Shield brothers meet once again.
Roman Reigns’ past RAW victory clashes with Seth Rollins’ latest claim
During the closing segment of the June 29 edition of RAW, Seth Rollins interrupted World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns and challenged him to a title match at SummerSlam.
While making his case, Rollins reminded Reigns of their shared history. Seth Rollins declared that he has “owned” him since breaking up The Shield. He also insisted that Reigns has “not been able to beat” him, using that claim to push the champion into accepting the match.
However, WWE’s own history includes a notable exception.
On the May 29, 2017 episode of RAW, Roman Reigns defeated Seth Rollins clean in the main event with a Spear. That victory remains part of WWE’s official record, making Rollins’ latest statement technically inaccurate.
Still, the line fits the story WWE has leaned into over the years. While Reigns owns that RAW victory, Rollins has consistently held the psychological edge in many of their biggest encounters.
He defeated Reigns at Money in the Bank 2016 and won their Royal Rumble 2022 match by disqualification after Reigns refused to release a guillotine choke. Rollins has also repeatedly reminded Reigns that his 2014 betrayal of The Shield continues to haunt “The Tribal Chief.”
Reigns didn’t argue the point. Instead, he admitted there was truth to what Rollins was saying, telling his longtime rival that he doesn’t just want to beat him anymore — he needs to.
With the World Heavyweight Championship on the line at SummerSlam, WWE is once again proving that history can be both remembered and rewritten, depending on who’s holding the microphone.
