WWE Hall of Famer Booker T recently reflected on mentoring John Cena. He revealed that Cena still applies lessons he learned years ago, both inside WWE and on movie sets.
Cena recently shared how Booker T taught him storytelling. He said they used the word “Shakespeare” as a secret code. Now, Booker T has responded by revealing he still sees Cena using those same lessons today.
Speaking on the Hall of Fame podcast, Brad Gilmore recalled interviewing John Cena in New York. He explained that Cena spoke in detail about Booker T’s “Shakespeare” lessons and how they helped him beyond wrestling.
WWE legend Booker T says John Cena still uses his lessons
Booker T said he always enjoyed working with Cena and praised his willingness to learn.
“You know, John was one of my favorite students, man. I mean, he’s one of my favorite guys that I got a chance to work with and actually teach him the game. All of it was on the fly, too. There was never anything that was rehearsed or anything.”
He also praised Cena’s in-ring selling and recalled one moment that stood out.
“I always loved the way John Cena would sell things because it had a real feel to it. It wasn’t like a traditional way of taking a bump or stuff like that. And I go, ‘Wow, man.’ I remember one time, I gave him a thrust kick, bang, and I hit him, and he didn’t take a bump on it, but he just melted into the freaking canvas. And I go, ‘Man, that was beautiful.’ Because he made me look so good. He made that kick look so exquisite.
“And I go, ‘Wow, man.’ And then, at the Blake, like what John Cena was having his retirement tour, pretty much. I saw so much of those lessons that I worked with John on, him working with guys that he’s on his way out with. I go, ‘Wow, man, it really works.’ It really works.”
Booker added that watching young talent continue to grow has become one of the most rewarding parts of his career.
“I love being able to work with young people. And John Cena, there again, man, he proved my methods. They really did.”
