Gerald Brisco recently confirmed an old explanation for how one WWE superstar’s name came to be.
Gerald Brisco, a retired wrestler best known for his time in WWE as a producer and in the ring, recently took social media to confirm a post that had been making the rounds. The post in question is an old interview of Tracy Smothers, who performed in the ring as Freddie Joe Floyd, revealing how his in-ring name came to be.
“Sometime…in the summer of ’96…went up there and visited with them. They ask you, creative, asks you all the questions, everything, and they came up with that name Freddie Joe Floyd, which was, Jack Briscoe’s first and middle name, and Floyd is…I think Jerry’s first name, something like that. And they really were originally from Bowlegs, Oklahoma,” said Smothers.
Gerald Brisco confirmed that Vince McMahon was playing a trick on him
The revelation that the name had something to do with the Briscoes is a funny one, and one that Gerald (who went by “Jerry” in the ring and as a nickname) confirmed by noting that Vince McMahon was “playing a rib on” him. Smothers went on to note that McMahon seemed to take pleasure one time when Gerald told a story about how a wrestler in Florida was using their name.
“I can remember sitting at the table, and I can remember Jerry Briscoe sitting right here, come over talking to me, and I didn’t know where the name came from. I just knew I had a job, and I knew that’s what they were going to call me, and I can remember Jerry, they told me where it came from and everything, and then Jerry said something about in the Florida Territory that they had a guy named Larry Brisco that was doing jobs, and when he said that, Vince lit up.
“He lit up. I knew that I was in trouble. And he said that Jerry called down there and was upset because they were jobbing him out and using the Brisco name. And he goes, ‘Oh, I bet Jack didn’t like that.’ And I said ‘Oh, God.'”
