WWE‘s CM Punk went into detail about his training and diet that led to his impressive physical transformation.
Reigning Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk recently appeared on the What’s Your Story? with Steph McMahon podcast. During the conversation, he opened up about his recent physical transformation, saying he got inspired after watching Chad Gable’s workout posts on social media.
Punk noted that he got in contact with Gable’s trainer, Jay Ferruggia, and told him about his goal to look different for WrestleMania 42 just six weeks before the event. Despite the short timeframe, the trainer told Punk that if he stuck to his diet and workout plan, they could make some serious progress, which eventually happened.
CM Punk says he made great progress to look different for WrestleMania 42
“Six weeks before WrestleMania, and I can’t really tell you what set it in motion. I would always see Chad Gable posting his workouts, and it’s programmed by Jay Ferruggia and all this other stuff. And I was just motivated to go into WrestleMania looking physically different, looking like, ‘Oh, wow! Okay, he really busted his a**.’ That was my only goal. It wasn’t weight. It wasn’t an ‘I need six pack, I need to do this,’ whatever,” CM Punk began.
“I called up Jay, and he was like, ‘I wish you would have got to me sooner, man. We only got six weeks.’ He’s like, ‘But if you listen to me, and you do what I say, and you eat what I tell you to eat,’ he’s like, ‘I think we can do some damage,’ and we did some damage,” Punk continued.
“I think I showed up at Mania; I didn’t say I was in the best shape of my career because I’ll always look back at when I was 26 and I originally tried to get the job in the first place, because my idea back then was they’re going to say, ‘Look at his body.’ That’s the one negative they can say. So I really busted my a** so they couldn’t say no. Then I got a job,” Punk went on.
Punk details his workout and diet plan
“So I really kind of just had that motivation to just look different, showing up to WrestleMania. But, obviously, to me, it’s a lifestyle change. I told Jay, I was like, ‘The only thing I’ve never done is, like, I’ve counted calories, and all that other stuff, but the big difference is I’ve never weighed food.’ So six weeks prior to Mania, I bought a food scale, I bought a rice maker, I bought a freezer, and it was just like I eat meals that have maybe three ingredients,” Punk said.
“It’s like white rice, 99/1 lean ground venison, and salt. That varies (fat), like, every morning I take a mirror selfie, I take my temperature and my weight, and I send it to Jay. Then he will tell me what protein, carbs, and fat to eat. It’s very specific,” Punk continued.
CM Punk then explained Jay Ferruggia’s reasoning for why he needed his temperature taken 40 minutes after meals every day. The trainer was tracking his temperature to measure his metabolic efficiency, based on the theory that an optimally functioning thyroid keeps the body’s baseline temperature higher and causes it to spike after eating as it burns calories. While the tracking served as a psychological tool for discipline, Punk noted that his actual physical progress came from simply buckling down and dialing in his diet.
He didn’t want the workout schedule to affect his relationship with AJ Lee
Speaking further, CM Punk noted that while he loves the intense training, he asked his trainer to take it slow because he knows his own perfectionist, obsessive nature can make him feel cranky, and he didn’t want it to affect his relationship with his wife, AJ Lee.
“I love it. I did tell Jay to start. I was like, ‘I will get obsessive with this, and I don’t want that to affect my relationship with my wife.’ Because I will get crabby, and I would rather just eat a donut and shut the f**k up, you know, than not say something snippy that doesn’t mean anything just because I’m cranky,” Punk said.
