WSU NEWS:

On 8/8, WSU traveled to Union City, NJ as part of WSU’s "On The Road" 2009 Summer Tour. The women of WSU invaded ACE Wrestling (AceProWrestling.com), as ACE had the first ever WSU WORLD Womens Championship match in the United States, as the newly dubbed World Champion (After defending the championship in Australia a week before) Mercedes Martinez took on former WSU Champion, Nikki Roxx.

These two veterans have had a storied history in wrestling before the existence of WSU. These two savvy grapplers trained together in the New England area and would team up and wrestle against each other from the start of their careers until 2006, where they had a huge TLC match for our partner promotion NHPW.

For a large part of 2007, Mercedes Martinez was out of wrestling due to an injury. Nikki Roxx quickly joined the WSU promotion and would go to the finals of a tournament to crown the first ever WSU Champion, which Alicia ultimately won.

Roxx would go on to become the first #1 contender to the championship, only to lose to Alicia in Alicia’s first title defense. Seeing that her ways weren’t turning into gold, Roxx had a change of heart and adopted a rule-breaking style.

As part of her new found transformation, Roxx crashed the 2008 King & Queen of the Ring Tournament, which was put on with our big brother promotion, the NWS. Roxx interfered in the tournament, with NWS star Rhett Titus. Together they were inserted into the finals of the tournament, in an impromptu fashion. Ironically, to win the tournament, Roxx defeated Mercedes Martinez’s team, as she was partnered with Bison Bravado.

However, that wasn’t enough for Roxx. Roxx said by virtue of her win, she deserved a shot at the WSU Championship. Tammy "Sunny" Sytch, then-champion, said she wanted to slap the cockiness out of Roxx and accepted a match. However, then-number 1 contender, Alexa Thatcher, stated she deserved a title match. This led to a WSU Championship Match between Thatcher/Sunny/Roxx, which Roxx won.

With the WSU Championship in her possession, Roxx turned back the championship dreams of Alexa Thatcher & Cindy Rogers. However, destiny & the aspiration for higher ground for both perhaps Angel Orsini & the WSU promotion, was realized on 5/31/08, when Angel Orsini answered Nikki Roxx’s open challenge for a championship match. Orsini, who was going through tough times, as she was the last one eliminated from the 2008 Women’s J-Cup Tournament & the last one eliminated from the 2008 Uncensored Rumble, pulled off what might have looked like an upset at the time, when she defeated Nikki Roxx cleanly to win the WSU Championship.

History was made. Angel Orsini went on to have the best championship reign in history and built the WSU Championship as the most important and coveted championship in womens wrestling today. The championship was defended more times in America than any other regional womens championship under her reign.

While Orsini went on her "Reign of Pain", Roxx left WSU and became a TV star in TNA. While TNA may have never realized their full potential with Roxx nor gave Roxx the best matches, it was no secret that Roxx was one of the best women wrestlers in the country.

Earlier this year, Roxx and TNA split ways. Roxx immediately re-joined WSU, where she had achieved success, as WSU became her east coast home promotion. Roxx made her championship aspirations known and entered the 2nd Annual Uncensored Rumble, where the winner would get a title shot.

Roxx went on to win the Rumble. However, due to WSU rules, previous champions are granted a rematch contract. Roxx was now owned two championship matches, based on the fact she never got a championship rematch when she lost the title to Orsini.

Roxx wasted no time in asking for a rematch, and on 8/8 at ACE Wrestling’s "Anarchy" event, Roxx challenged for the championship she lost over a year ago.

WSU World Womens Champion, Mercedes Martinez, has been on a sky-high run ever since she won the championship on 3/7/09 in a Bull Rope match from Angel Orsini. Martinez went on to defend the championship in a triple threat match with Rain & Orsini. Martinez also defended the championship against the vicious Jana.

However all history was made when Martinez did the unthinkable, and that was defending the championship in an IronWoman Match. After 69 minutes, Martinez defeated Orsini to solidify her status as the WSU Champion and perhaps the best womens wrestler in the world today.

As champions previous, Martinez has looked to elevate the status of the WSU Championship. On 8/1/09, Martinez made WSU history when she defended the championship in Australia against Bombshell Bo. Martinez has been asked back to defend the championship again, as the fans enjoyed seeing what the best in America had to offer.

However, all roads led to 8/8. Roxx coming off her huge Uncensored Rumble win battled the "Iron Woman" Mercedes Martinez.

The two had a classic back and forth encounter. These two, who have trained with each other, have grown so much as wrestlers and professionals, that they were able to counter each others offense.

At the 15 minute mark, the bell sounded, as the time limit was up. When the WSU World Womens Championship usually is defended at WSU shows, there is no time limit, but when the championship is defended on outside shows, WSU has to work within the time the promotion we are working with has allotted for us. Since there was no winner after 15 minutes the match was ruled a draw.

However, fans insisted on 5 more minutes, with a huge "5 More Minutes" chant. ACE management, recognizing the importance of the match, granted 5 more minutes to the WSU World Womens Championship match before the ACE Heavyweight Championship would be defended, as that was the next scheduled match on the event.

The two wrestled to another time limit draw, but just as time was expiring, Roxx had Martinez up for her Barbie Crusher. However, time ran out before Roxx could execute her devastating finisher.

Since 20 minutes had passed and the ACE show had to progress as well, the match was officially ruled as a Time Limit Draw.

Martinez stated she didn’t want to be a champion that won matches this way. We will have full videos soon of the words Martinez & Roxx had for each other in the ring. Martinez said on 8/22 in Boonton, she wants Roxx in a No-Time-Limit match, to prove who really is the superior of the two and the worthiest of the ultimate accolade in womens wrestling, the WSU World Womens Championship.

"The Iron Woman" is a nickname that supporters have given the World Champion, as Martinez will literally wrestle all night to prove her dominance and skill in the realm of womens wrestling. Martinez and Roxx will do battle one more time, as Roxx will cash in her last title opportunity for the time being on 8/22.
