WWE.com has updated their website to include the brand new Cruiserweight Championship, which will be making its debut on Monday Night Raw this coming week. The title was won by TJ Perkins on this week’s Cruiserweight Classic live finale, and we have a small update on the continuity of the belt going forward.
It looks like the 2016 edition of the title will be a brand new entity, and will not belong to the history of the original Cruiserweight Championship that was established in WCW back in 1996, and eventually merged with the history of the older WCW Light Heavyweight Championship when the company was bought out by WWE. The company website lists TJ Perkins as the first and only holder of the title, with a reign of one day and 15 hours as of this posting.
For those curious, WWE still acknowledges the lineage of the United States Championship, which also came over from WCW, and goes all the way back to Harley Race and Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling in 1975.
