Former WWE Ref Books Royal Rumble

Jimmy Korderas, former WWE referee of over 20 years, gives his early booking thoughts on Roman Reigns. Here’s a sample:

The Royal Rumble is the most exciting event to fantasy book. Check out my CSR Wrestling colleague Blake Mitchamore who presented his ideas earlier this week. As for me…

Vince McMahon still knows how to push buttons. On RAW this past Monday night, he served as the special guest referee in the WWE World Heavyweight title match between champ Roman Reigns and challenger Sheamus. Despite all the shenanigans and an attempted assist from referee Scott Armstrong, Reigns managed to overcome the odds and retain his championship. After the match, a furious VKM announced that for the first time in WWE history, the WWE title will be defended in the Royal Rumble match. Before everyone goes all 1992 on me that Rumble match was for the vacant title therefore it was not defended.

When I first heard the announcement, I really wasn’t sure what to make of the change. But after giving it some thought, I am fully on board with the decision to have the title at stake in the Rumble. Of course there are several different directions this match could go. A lot will depend on how the match is structured leading the way on the road to WrestleMania. Although we still do not have a full list of participants for the match, there are only a select few that in all likelihood can be considered viable options to emerge from the match as WWE champion. I put that number at four individuals and that’s pushing it.

Let me begin with the reigning, defending champion Roman Reigns. With the story being that the Authority will do everything in its power to pry the title from Reigns’ grip, it would only make logical sense that they force Reigns to enter the match at #1. Of course they could try to say that they would not make him the #1 entrant and make Reigns the #2 which is virtually the same thing. Either way, the champ would have to fight insurmountable odds and go through 29 other superstars to successfully retain his championship. In theory this strategy should help increase Reigns’ popularity. I believe this would work as the company does not have to deal with the Daniel Bryan factor this year like they have the previous two Rumbles. Some fans may try to latch onto someone to replace Bryan as the IWC/vocal minority choice but other than Brock Lesnar, there is no one else that is even close to filling that spot. If Roman Reigns does retain the WWE title at the Royal Rumble, then the question is who does he face at WrestleMania? HHH seems to be the obvious choice. HHH, upset that all attempts to dethrone Reigns have failed decides that he will do the job himself and appoints himself the #1 contender to the WWE title and will face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania.
