AJ Styles Reveals How He Got Busted Open Before His WrestleMania 38 Match

AJ Styles explains how he cut open his face before stepping in the ring at WrestleMania 38.

Styles competed against Edge in a singles match on night two of WrestleMania 38. The match was not only the first time the pair had met in singles action, but it was also notable because Styles was busted open before the match even started.

During his appearance at a Fanatics Live Signing in Las Vegas, Styles was asked if he’d seen the WrestleMania 41 stage yet. Styles said he had not, so Big E showed a photo on his phone. This led Styles to pull out his glasses to look at it.

Styles joked about being blind and praised this year’s stage, then asked the crowd if they recall “the one where I walked out with a bloody face.” He then shared how he hit his face on the bottom of the giant star in the middle of the stage, which was also used as the competitors’ entrance tunnel.

“I hit my head. Yeah, I cut my head or something, because [I can’t see!] I like my hood to cover my face a little bit,” AJ Styles explained to the panel. “And I had to run out there pretty quick, because of the pyro, and it [came up on me before I noticed it] BAM! It knocked my hood off, I was pissed off the whole time.”

AJ Styles and Edge would go on to have a rematch at WrestleMania Backlash the following month. The match was notable due to Rhea Ripley officially joining Edge to form the Judgment Day stable. Edge and Styles would share the ring two more times in WWE. The first match was a six-person mixed tag match at Hell In A Cell 2022. A triple-threat world title tournament match on the May 12, 2023 episode of SmackDown followed.

Styles also said he’d love a chance to compete for TNA one more time and revealed his “ideal” opponent.
