AEW Dynamite Results: Review, Grades, Card For July 9

Our AEW Dynamite results for tonight include an All Star 8-Man tag, Mercedes Moné will have one more face-to-face with Toni Storm, and Samoa Joe going one-on-one with Wheeler Yuta.

AEW Dynamite Card

The announced card is as follows:

  • All Star 8-Man Tag: Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, and the Young Bucks vs. Hangman Page, Will Ospreay, Powerhouse Hobbs, and Katsuyori Shibata
  • Samoa Joe vs. Wheeler Yuta
  • 4-Way for the #2 spot in the Women’s Casino Gauntlet: Megan Bayne vs. Tay Melo vs. Queen Aminata vs. Thekla
  • A final face-to-face between Mercedes Moné and Toni Storm
  • A “Talky-Talk” between Mark Briscoe and MJF

AEW Dynamite Results:

This week’s episode of Dynamite kicks off with the final face-to-face between Mercedes Moné and Toni Storm ahead of All In: Texas.

Mercedes Moné makes her way to the ring and calls out Storm. Toni appears on the Tron with Luther instead, and Mercedes dares her to come out to the ring and meet her face to face. Storm and Luther make their way to the ring.

Storm runs down Mercedes like only she can. Toni says in the AEW World Championship, she found herself, but all the titles Mercedes wears are just masks to hide herself. Storm wants to know what she’s so afraid of.

Moné says they have walked similar paths, but they are nothing alike. Moné says she’ll always be better than her and she’s not afraid of anyone or anything. Mercedes says she’s been to hell and back and she’s made the devil her bitch. Moné says the more the people hate her, the more she wins, and no one will stop the Moné Train, not even her.

Mercedes calls herself the one woman revolution. Storm says legacies don’t exist and eventually we’re all going to die. Storm says all that matters is one moment. Toni says Mercedes fears an ordinary life while she only fears an ordinary death.

Storm says Mercedes deserves all the titles in the world, but not this one. Storm says Mercedes will go down as the woman who couldn’t win the big one. Moné says she wanted this to be civil, but since they can’t do that, may the best woman win this weekend. They each drink champagne before Storm tells Mercedes to eat shit. Storm tries to hit Mercedes with the Moné Maker, but Mercedes escapes and runs away.

Jon Moxley sends a warning to Hangman

We hear from Jon Moxley backstage. Moxley alludes to his previous Texas Death Match with Hangman Page. Moxley questions if Page can hold the line under all the pressure of people counting on him this weekend. Mox says Page is a waste and is pathetic. Moxley says Page has one chance to prove him wrong, and Page better walk that aisle Saturday like it’s the last time he ever will. Moxley reminds Page that whether he likes it or not, he’s all in this weekend.

The Young Bucks arrive in their limo and make their way into the arena.

Bandido and Brody King vs. ProtoShita (w/ Don Callis and Lance Archer)

  • The finish of the match saw Konosuke Takeshita hit Bandido with Raging Fire to score the pinfall victory for his team.

Winners: ProtoShita

Grade: A-

Yeah, this match ruled. Great tag team action to kick off tonight’s show. Takeshita defeating Bandido clean leads me to believe that Bandido will retain his title Friday night at Supercard of Honor, but stranger things have happened.

We get a video package from The Outrunners, who declare their rivalry with FTR is far from done.

Will FTR and The Patriarchy be on the same page for their match on Collision?

FTR and The Patriarchy are backstage with Renee Paquette. Christian Cage says he doesn’t have enough time to run down all of FTR’s accomplishments and believes both sides will bring it in their eight-man tag match tomorrow night on Collision.

Cage says if FTR scratches their back, they will scratch theirs when they win the titles at All In. Stokely Hathaway goes off on the fact that FTR aren’t in the title match this weekend, but says that isn’t Cage’s fault. Hathaway makes Cage shake his hand and says they’ll see about back scratching after Collision.

Ricochet (w/ Gates of Agony) vs. Blake Christian

  • The finish of the match saw Ricochet hit Blake Christian with Vertigo to score the pinfall victory.

Winner: Ricochet

After the match, Gates of Agony laid out Blake Christian. Ricochet is announced as a member of the Men’s Casino Gauntlet match this weekend.

Grade: B

It was a fine match. A bit on the short side. It was basically just a showcase for what Ricochet looks like with Gates of Agony as his muscle at ringside.

The Hurt Syndicate are being messed with by JetSpeed

Renee Paquette is backstage with The Hurt Syndicate. MJF talks about the Casino Gauntlet Match briefly before MVP tells him Bobby and Shelton need to go do a photo shoot. However, when they go to get their tag titles, it’s revealed that JetSpeed has taken them. This leaves MJF to deal with Mark Briscoe alone in their “talky-talk.”

A video package airs for the title unification match between Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada.

It’s time for a talky-talk…

Mark Briscoe and MJF make their way to the ring for their “talky-talk.” The crowd chants “tiny pickle” at MJF. Friedman says the phrase “talky-talk” is some of the dumbest shit he’s ever heard in his life. MJF says everyone there are white trash hicks like Mark Briscoe so he imitates Birscoe in a way they will understand saying he’s going to dogwalk Briscoe at All In. The crowd tells MJF to shut the f*ck up, but he doesn’t listen.

MJF says stepping in the ring with him is as ignorant as throwing rocks at a man with a machine gun. Friedman says there will be no “talky-talk” so Briscoe can leave and go back to his meth lab in Delaware to feed his 95 kids.

Mark Briscoe says it sounds like to him that MJF needs a country ass whooping. Briscoe says MJF can try to berate him but it doesn’t work because he’s proud to be a redneck and the fact that he worked hard to put every dollar he has in his pocket.

Jay Briscoe is brought up

Briscoe says MJF is the “rich guy” in the ring, but Mark believes he’s rich too in blessings. Talking about his friends and family. Briscoe says Max is bankrupt, and that’s the word of the day. Briscoe says MJF is morally bankrupt and he has no soul. Marks says he knows he’s going to talk about his brother and rile him up, so get it over with.

MJF says he would never say a bad word about his brother and says there is a special place in Heaven for Jay Briscoe. However, Friedman says he pities Mark’s brother because he has to look down and see what he’s become. MJF says Jay has had to watch Mark go from one-half of the greatest tag team of all time to a joke.

MJF says if Jay could talk to him right now, he would say it should have been Mark in the accident instead of him. Briscoe takes MJF down, and this brings out The Hurt Syndicate, but they are jumped from behind by JetSpeed. MJF runs away through the crowd as JetSpeed gets some long-awaited revenge on The Hurt Syndicate.

The Patriarchy comes out and they Conchairto Lashley’s leg multiple times. Meanwhile, JetSpeed continues to beat down Benjamin in the ring. Eventually, Patriarchy and JetSpeed stare each other down.

4-Way for the #2 spot in the Women’s Casino Gauntlet: Megan Bayne (w/ Penelope Ford) vs. Tay Melo (w/ Anna Jay) vs. Queen Aminata vs. Thekla

  • The finish of the match saw Megan Bayne hit Queen Aminata with a running Liger Bomb to score the pinfall victory.

Winner: Megan Bayne

Grade: B+

Very good four-way. I think it was pretty easy to predict the winner here. I think Bayne is my favorite this weekend as well. Her holding a contract for a future title shot will be a very dangerous presence in the women’s division for weeks and months to come.

Could we get a match between Thekla and Queen Aminata at All In: Texas?

Backstage, Renee Paquette tries to get a word with Thekla. However, Queen Aminata jumps her before she can say anything. As security separates the women, Mark Briscoe pops up to hype up what he’s going to do to MJF in the Casino Gauntlet match. Paquette’s face during the Briscoe promo was one of pure joy. If you could bottle that up, you’d be a millionaire.

Samoa Joe vs. Wheeler Yuta

  • The finish of the match saw Samoa Joe lock Wheeler Yuta in the coquina clutch to win the match via submission.

Winner: Samoa Joe

After the match, Gabe Kidd jumps Samoa Joe but is quickly chased off by other members of The Opps.

Grade: B+

The match was good. And the finish was definitely expected. I’m guessing Kidd will be replacing PAC in this Trios Title match this weekend. It’s a shame PAC is going to miss another All In due to injury. Poor guy just can’t catch a break.

All Star 8-Man Tag: Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, and the Young Bucks vs. Hangman Page, Will Ospreay, Powerhouse Hobbs, and Katsuyori Shibata

  • The finish of the match saw Jon Moxley lock Katsuyori Shibata in the Bulldog Choke to win the match for his team via submission.

Winners: Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, and the Young Bucks

Grade: B+

After the match, Gabe Kidd and the rest of the Death Riders hit the ring and beat down everyone. The Tron lights up and shows Swerve Strickland in the parking lot crushing the Young Bucks’ limo with a CAT Crane Truck. The Bucks run off, and as the brawl continues, it comes down to Hangman and Mox. Moxley backs down as AEW Dynamite goes off the air.

AEW Dynamite Review:

I thought this was a fun show. But for a go-home show to the company’s biggest event of the year, I feel like it could have been a lot stronger. I would imagine AEW is still trying to move tickets and sell pay-per-views for this week’s event, and I’m not sure this show did it for someone who might be on the fence.

They have a live Collision tomorrow, so they have one more chance to make a lasting impression before Saturday. While I enjoyed tonight’s show, I feel it didn’t quite hit the mark as a show that should have been very important heading into All In.

Grade: B+
