Last night was 17-time WWE Undisputed Champion John Cena’s final SummerSlam appearance. He was in the main event, defending his title against the American Nightmare Cody Rhodes in a Street Fight. In the match, Rhodes dethroned Cena.
To quote Michael Cole, both Cody Rhodes and John Cena put on an ‘instant classic.’ The challenger and the champion gave everything they had. The 17-time WWE Undisputed Champion managed to kick out of three Cross Rhodes. The American Nightmare also kicked out of multiple Attitude Adjustments, and even after a Super AA. After several back-and-forth exchanges, Rhodes managed to pin Cena and become a two-time champion.
After the match, John Cena handed the title to Rhodes. It was a moment of passing the torch. Following the PLE, at the Post-show Event, the American Nightmare praised the Leader of the Cenation. He also mentioned that the ‘passing of the torch’ was as real as it could get in the business.
“There’s those things, with WWE doing WWE: Unreal on Netflix, for example. There’s so much of what we are seeing that we’ve never seen before. But sometimes it’s just really easy for me to tell you like it is. I think you [Joe Tessitore] know this, I know you [Big E] know this, I know you [Pete Rosenberg] know this. I think we know this. A moment like that [the closing segment of the main event], is as real as you will ever get in our industry. And before I could say, ‘Hey, I did it. Hey, I worked so hard,’ we have to give it up for the G.O.A.T, John Cena,” Cody Rhodes said.
The PLE came to an end with the shocking return of the Beast Incarnate, Brock Lesnar. He came out and took out Cena.
