Kevin Owens Makes Indy Wrestling Appearance During WWE Hiatus

Kevin Owens shows his support for independent wrestling in a rare video package outside of WWE.

The Prizefighter made a video appearance for Green Mountain Wrestling, an independent promotion based in Vermont, over the weekend. Owens introduced himself as Kevin Steen, his indie moniker, before hyping the crowning of the inaugural champion in GMW’s history.

“Hello everyone, my name is Kevin Steen,” Owens said. You might know me from some wrestling shows I’ve been on, or some wrestling matches I’ve had, but tonight’s not about me. “Tonight is about crowning the very first champion in Green Mountain Wrestling history, which obviously makes tonight a very big show.

“And you know, I wish I could be there in person, because I’ve been keeping up with Green Mountain Wrestling for a while now, and seeing it grow and grow, and it’s been pretty exciting. You know, if I was there tonight, I’d be able to award that title to the first champion myself, which, if you look at the title up closely, there might be a certain wrestling move being executed on one of the site plates that has a little something to do with me…”

Kevin Owens is rehabbing after neck surgery

Kevin Owens hasn’t appeared in a WWE ring in months. He was originally slated for a match against Randy Orton at WrestleMania 41. However, Owens announced he would need surgery for a neck injury he suffered earlier this year, forcing WWE to call off the match. Orton ended up facing Joe Hendry on the big stage.

Owens provided an update on his neck during an appearance at NASCAR’s 2025 Coke Zero Sugar 400 event in Daytona, Florida, last month. He revealed that he needed neck fusion surgery, though doctors weren’t sure how serious the issue was at first.

“I needed neck fusion. It was very stressful going into it, because we weren’t really sure how severe the fusion was going to be, how many levels, all this stuff. Thankfully, [the fusion] ended up only being one level, which is the best-case scenario for something like this. But, the surgery was successful, I had a great doctor,” Owens said.

While Owens expressed hope that the surgery would allow him to return to the ring, he admitted there is still no guarantee of a comeback.
