AJ Styles has a chance to beat up John Cena one more time. However, he didn’t think the match would happen.
Styles spoke with ABEMA to promote WWE’s Super Show Japan events on October 17 and 18. During the interview, Styles spoke about his match with John Cena at WWE Crown Jewel: Perth. Styles shared his excitement for the match and said he didn’t think it would happen, adding that it “came out of nowhere.”
“I am certainly happy for the opportunity to wrestle John Cena on his retirement tour. I did not think this was going to happen,” Styles said. “It honestly just came out of nowhere, but I accept it. I want it, and me and John are going to have one last match. It’s going to be incredible.”
The Styles vs. Cena match seemingly came as a result of Cena polling fans. The WWE Universe overwhelmingly said yes they wanted to see it, and Triple H made the match official. Cena also implied he was the “captain” of his retirement tour now, doing what the fans would want.
Reports suggest AJ Styles vs. John Cena was always planned
However, a recent report from F4WOnline.com’s Dave Meltzer (via Wrestling Observer Radio) suggested the match plans were in place for a while.
“This (John Cena vs. AJ Styles) match was always scheduled for Australia. Always,” Meltzer said. “So the whole deal about Cena and AJ, with Cena doing the tribute to him because he wasn’t gonna get to wrestle him, that was actually to build to this match; that was not actually ever the case.
“The idea was they’d tell people ‘you’re not going to get this match’ — so to create a demand for the match, they basically told the story that Cena is paying tribute to him because he’s only got limited dates, and AJ ain’t getting it. Then AJ did that dark speech on RAW during the American commercials about how ‘I’m mad at how I’m being booked’ and whatever. It was all to build up this match.”
