CM Punk Explains Why This WWE Star Should Face John Cena In His Retirement Match

CM Punk believes this former WWE World Champion is the ideal opponent for John Cena’s final match.

John Cena is nearing the end of his in-ring career, with only two WWE appearances left: his match at Survivor Series: WarGames this Saturday and his final bout on December 13 at WWE Saturday Night Main Event.

As Cena prepares to close the curtain on his legendary career, longtime rival CM Punk has praised the way Cena has carried himself throughout this farewell run. Speaking with Kay Adams on the Up & Adams Show, Punk discussed Cena’s final weeks in WWE.

He noted how surreal it is to see John Cena so close to retirement and talked about the whether Cena keeps the Intercontinental Title or Dominik Mysterio tries to steal it. He said, “Cena is, you know, I think our Wayne Gretzky. I’ve been saying he’s somebody who’s just kind of held it down for a very, very long time.

“And for him to wrap it up, I think, is like watching him exit with such style and grace and dignity. It has been a real treat. You know, we don’t get to often say goodbye in real time to our sports heroes, so this is one time we can.”

CM Punk backs Gunther as John Cena’s final opponent

When asked who he believed should face Cena in his final match, specifically from the competitors in the Last Time Is Now tournament, Punk picked Gunther without hesitation. He said, “Who’s the perfect opponent that’s actually in the field? I mean, right now, I don’t know if it’s perfect, but it’s looking like Gunther because I’ve been in the ring with him, and I know what he can do, and I don’t know who else in that tournament can beat him right now.”
