Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl Compares Fame To Wearing Andre The Giant’s Underwear

Foo Fighters lead singer Dave Grohl explained how a band’s rising fame feels. He also did it in a way that most pro wrestling fans can probably understand.

Grohl’s 2021 book, The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music, features a passage where he explains what Nirvana’s rise felt like in the moment. Grohl joined Nirvana after the band released its 1989 album, Bleach. This was also just in time for their skyrocket to fame after releasing the iconic 1991 album, Nevermind.

Grohl highlighted how Nirvana had a moderate following, but soon found themselves playing in much larger venues once Nevermind hit the airwaves. To highlight the change, Grohl said it was like slipping on a pair of WWE legend Andre the Giant’s underwear.

“No strangers to a Saturday night sweatbox, these sardine-can-sized clubs were commonplace for Nirvana,” Grohl wrote. “So the sudden jump to much larger, 600- to 1000-capacity venues like the Masquerade in Atlanta, St. Andrews Hall in Detroit, and now Trees in Dallas felt like slipping on a pair of Andre the Giant’s tighty-whities: a bit roomy round the sensitive bits.”

Dave Grohl is ready to ‘Drive’ on late night

Dave Grohl is set to appear on Wednesday’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live. The day also happens to be the rocker’s 57th birthday. Grohl will play drums during a performance of ‘Drive,’ a song recorded for the Brad Pitt movie F1.

Grohl will perform the song with pop star Ed Sheeran on the show. The recorded track also features John Mayer, Blake Slatkin, Pino Palladino and Foo Fighters keyboardist Rami Jaffee, who will all join the live performance.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! airs at 11:35 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
