The Face That Runs The Place

The crowd gives Styles a standing ovation as he kicks off the show. Styles notes that Gunther claims he is going to end Styles’ career at the Royal Rumble. Styles promises not to go anywhere. 2026 is the year Styles will retire. It just won’t be this Sunday. Styles says he wants to be the world champion one more time. Gunther is good, but he isn’t phenomenal. CM Punk‘s music hits. Punk says he’s known Styles for over 20 years. There is nothing but respect between them at this point. As the crowd cheers Punk, Punk asks Styles why he’s doing this.

The stakes are just too high. Styles asks Punk if he doesn’t think he can beat Gunther. Punk didn’t say that. If it doesn’t go Styles’ way, that means Punk and Styles never get to go one-on-one in a WWE ring. Styles says he knows he can beat Gunther and Punk. Styles says if they fight tonight and he wins, and he beats Gunther, he should be the number one contender for Punk’s title. Punk says if they fight tonight, it’s going to be for the championship. Styles and Punk shake on it: Punk vs. Styles for the World Heavyweight Championship.

Grade: B

Great opening segment that gave us an unexpected main event for tonight’s show.

The Judgement Day vs. Stephanie Vaquer, and RhIYO

SKY works over Perez. Perez drives SKY into the corner, leading to the Judgement Day team taking turns on SKY. SKY tags in Vaquer, who floors Morgan with a dropkick. Morgan tries a sunset flip. Vaquer stomps on Morgan’s face to block it and drops a leg. Rodriguez rolls in and stops Vaquer’s Devil’s Kiss with a boot to the gut. After the break, The Judgement Day continues to work over the champion. Vaquer manages to tag in SKY.

SKY sends Perez flying with a missile dropkick. Morgan saves Perez from a moonsault. Perez and Morgan double-team SKY. SKY manages a cold tag to Ripley. Ripley clears the ring. Ripley sends Morgan flying into Rodriguez with a Razor’s Edge. Perez and Morgan set up their Codebreaker/Russian Leg Sweep combo, but Ripley blocks it. SKY takes Morgan out with a dropkick. Ripley hits Riptide on Perez for the win.

Winners- Stephanie Vaquer and RhIYO

Grade: C+

Fun, but somewhat sloppy match. The chemistry was just a bit off at several points here, but it was still a good time. Great finish.

The Vision

Heyman gets booed out of the building every time he tries to speak. Heyman puts over each member of the Vision. The crowd boos. Heyman says Raw GM Adam Pearce put his hands on Bron Breakker first, so what Breakker did was justified. Heyman also claims Pearce planted brassknucks for Rey Mysterio. Pearce walks to the ring to defend himself. Pearce apologizes to Breakker for putting his hands on him first.

The crowd boos as Pearce promises it will not happen again. Pearce lifted Breakker’s suspension and added him to the Royal Rumble. Heyman tries to shake Pearce’s hand. Pearce doesn’t shake, but he puts each member of the Vision in the Rumble. Heyman weirdly doesn’t look happy. Pearce also books Austin Theory vs. Rey Mysterio, which starts now.

Grade: B-

This was a weird one. What is Pearce playing at? Is Heyman worried about cracks in the Vision’s foundation?

Rey Mysterio w/Penta and Dragon Lee vs. Austin Theory w/The Vision

Theory is in control early. After trying to take off Mysterio’s mask, Mysterio fires up and sends Theory into the ring post with a rana. Everyone fights outside the ring. Theory surprises Mysterio with a Stomp for the win.

Winner- Austin Theory

After the match, The Vision lays out Penta, Lee, and Mysterio.

Grade: C+

Standard stuff here. Fun beatdown after the match.

Backstage, Rodriguez is searching for Vaquer. Vaquer spawns out of nowhere and attacks Rodriguez. Both women are eventually separated by officials.

Tag Team Champion Jey Uso is out to watch the next match.

Number One Contender’s Match: The New Day vs. Alpha Academy vs. Los Americanos vs. American Made

Number One Contender’s Match: The New Day (Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods) vs. Alpha Academy (Otis & Akira Tozawa) vs. Los Americanos (Rayo & Bravo Americano) vs. American Made (Brutus Creed & Julius Creed)

After a ton of shenanigans, Tozawa hits a top rope senton on Julius Creed for the win.

Winners- Alpha Academy

Grade: C+

Eh. These go-home shows are just… the worst. Happy for Tozawa and Otis. This match was just a match.

World Heavyweight Championship Match: CM Punk (c) vs. AJ Styles

Styles and Punk trade take-downs and submissions. Neither man can get an early advantage. Styles avoids a GTS, Punk blocks that Calf Crusher. Styles turns Punk’s Anaconda Vice into a pin for a nearfall. After the break, both men trade strikes. Punk sends Styles into the turnbuckle, chest first. Leg Lariat by Punk, followed by a neck breaker. Running knee/bulldog combo by Punk. Styles sits up and eats a shining wizard from Punk. Styles kicks out.

Punk tries the GTS. Styles fights out of it and unloads on Punk with the Stylin’ combo. Punk counters Styles Ushigorshi with a Pepsi twist (when is the last time Punk did that?). Styles kicks at two. Punk and Styles trade finisher attempts. The fight spills out of the ring. Punk counters a sliding knee by Styles with a GTS out on the floor. Styles is almost counted out. Styles manages to roll Punk into the Styles Clash!

Punk kicks out! Punk trips Styles during a springboard. Styles and Punk trade strikes. Styles floors Punk with a Pelé kick. Punk picks Styles up for another GTS. Finn Bálor appears and attacks Punk, causing the referee to throw out the match.

No Contest

Bálor dropkicks Punk into the barricade several times. Bálor crushes Punk with three Coup de Gras.

Grade: B

Good match that had no shot of actually having a finish. It was a toss-up between Bálor or Gunther getting involved. If it really is the end for Styles, it’s good that we got to see this match at least once in a WWE ring.

WWE Raw Review:

The trend of boring go-home shows before PLEs is alive and well. This show was mostly filler with a few good matches sprinkled throughout. Nothing that happened on this show changed how this writer felt about the upcoming Royal Rumble. There is so little heat going into the show. The Rumble gimmick is the only thing keeping this together, and even that isn’t that thrilling this year. The one thing we have going for us is that the winners for both Rumble matches are up in the air. What did you think of the show? Let us know in the comments!
