Drew McIntyre explained how this key factor played a major role in helping him finally become WWE Champion.
McIntyre has come close to winning the WWE Championship several times over the past few years. Many of those attempts ended in disappointment due to outside interference or Money in the Bank cash-ins. Despite those setbacks, McIntyre remained a constant and important part of WWE programming, and he believes social media helped him stay relevant.
Fans have spent years reacting to McIntyre’s online persona, from enjoying his trash talk to turning his posts into memes. McIntyre leaned into that attention and stayed very active online, something he now credits as a key factor in his rise back to the top.
Speaking on TMZ Inside the Ring, Drew McIntyre was asked whether his growing influence on social media helped him become champion this time around. He said, “I think everything counts, for sure. You know, the character itself, timing, your ability in the ring, your ability on the microphone, your ability to connect with fans. But at the same time, we live in the world of social media so gigantic. And if you’re not using it to its potential then — try to put this nicely — you’re an idiot.”
He explained that he treats social media as an extension of his character. “So I have a lot of fun on social media. I basically am just myself. I run my mouth, I talk trash on everybody. The the leash is off. When I first won the title during the pandemic. I felt like I’d reached my full form, and I was basically — I know I’m a version of myself with the volume turned up slightly. But I was still holding back a bit because I’m a bit of a bit of a crap talker.”
McIntyre reflected on his first title win during the pandemic, saying he felt close to his full form but still held back a bit. Now, he feels completely free. “And now like, the reins are off. I’ve been running my mouth non-stop for years. Sometimes I get my wrist slapped for it backstage. I’ll say whatever I want on social media, but I don’t care because my job is very simple: entertain the fans. As long as the fans are entertained, then I’m doing my job.” [H/T: 411mania]
