John Cena Apologizes For Being Against WWE: Unreal and Confirms Season 3 Role

John Cena says he’ll be featured in season three of Netflix’s WWE: Unreal series. He also finally came to terms with the show being a success.

Cena retired from pro wrestling in December when he lost his final match to Gunther at WWE’s Saturday Night’s Main Event. Cena has not made any appearances on WWE programming since then, but he’ll be featured in the upcoming third season of WWE: Unreal.

John Cena confirmed he recently filmed content for the hit Netflix show during an appearance on the No-Contest Wrestling podcast. He told hosts O’Shea Jackson Jr. and TJ Jefferson that WWE had tried to get him on the show before, but he finally relented for the show’s third season.

Cena was talking about evolving with the wrestling business, citing Shawn Michaels’ advice to him, ‘You can evolve, or be a dinosaur.’ Cena says he wasn’t sure he could evolve in this new era where everything is shared, then revealed he finally gave in and filmed content for Unreal.

John Cena confirms he’ll appear on season 3 of WWE: Unreal

“I just did a sit-down for WWE: Unreal season three. I led with, ‘I’m sorry,’” Cena explained. “Because those motherf*ckers tried to get me for season one and season two, and I’m like, ‘I’m not spoiling any stories and I’m going to be curt and short in my answers.’ [I told the producers] ‘You guys are from football, this is a business that’s way more nuanced. You don’t know what you’re doing. You’re taking a swing and the institutional knowledge that I have says we never do this.’ So you’re going against everything I believe in.”

Cena says now that Unreal is ready for a third season, he has to admit that Netflix and WWE were right, and he was wrong.

“I have to, because it works,” Cena admitted. “People want to see it. So I have to—if you want to fight it, don’t watch it.”

Cena did not share any more information about what he filmed for season 3. However, the series will likely highlight his retirement tour. WWE: Unreal is confirmed to return in Summer 2026, but an exact premiere date has not been announced. Season 1 premiered in July 2025, while season 2 aired in January 2026.
