Thunder Rosa reflects on her Unsanctioned Lights Out match with Britt Baker.
In March 2021, Thunder Rosa and Britt Baker made headlines when they competed in an AEW Unsanctioned Lights Out match, with Baker famously shedding blood during the action. While looking back on the hardcore bout, Rosa noted that she wanted to inspire others through it. Meanwhile, Rosa believes that Baker, her opponent, may have been in it for something else.
“This happened during the pandemic in front of no people, only just our peers. It was a Lights Out match. It was between Dr. Britt Baker and me. We won the match of the year during that year, which is a huge deal for professional wrestlers,” Rosa told Real 92.3 LA.
“It was the first time that they saw two women bleed on TV. We had an extreme match. There was ladders, chairs, thumbtacks, you name it. It was brutal. I remember the time that that happened, I wasn’t even signed for the company. Was working for NWA, so I was a lone person there. I remember Britt was telling me like, ‘We’re going to make sure that this goes great and we don’t mess up or whatever.’ She said something else, and I’m just thinking like, ‘Girl, I know you’re doing it for the clout.’ I’m doing it because people don’t understand that this is not only going to change my life, but this is going to change a lot of morenitas and brown people’s lives.”
Rosa ultimately emerged victorious in the Lights Out affair after sending Baker crashing through a table with a Fire Thunder Driver. A year later, the Baker and Rosa rekindled their rivalry when they met in a pair of AEW Women’s Championship matches, the latter of which was contested inside a steel cage. Baker evened the score by winning the first title match, though Rosa bounced back by beating Baker in the second.
